I get the message that a new version is out and do I want to install now.
Should I just go ahead and install, or do I need to uninstall something first?
Thanks,
Beth

No, just update it. Process is fully automated.
What is your OS ?
If XP or Vista I would say, Yes just go ahead and update there is no need to uninstall the old version and install new.
Just FYI now, the latest version is 4.7.986.

I’m sorry I didn’t mention my OS in my original post. It’s Windows 98 (until I can afford to upgrade or as long as it lasts, whichever comes first). Does that mean that I can’t just install the update, that I need to uninstall first? I don’t trust my memory completely (which is why I asked the question), but I could swear that for the last update, I just went ahead and updated. The only problem I had at that time wasn’t Avast’s fault. My old OS doesn’t always do a proper shutdown (a common Windows 98 problem) so wasn’t keeping the update. I had to keep reinstalling the update until my computer would finally do a full shutdown and retain the update.
Do you think my memory is correct, that I can do the install without uninstalling first?
Thanks,
Beth
Hi Beth
I’m sure he was well intentioned but I’m not sure where DavidR was going with his “XP or Vista” qualification. My experience with automatic updating 95OSR2 and 98SE is 100% problem free but I only have the ‘Standard Shield’ and ‘Internet Mail’ providers installed due to compatibility issues with older OSs.
cheers,
Vlad
Where I was going with the XP/Vista qualification was in a previous program update, some win98 users had to download the latest version, uninstall, reboot and install to get it to update. The qualification was also to prompt a response from Beth.
So Beth your memory would appear to be fine, for the greatest majority of users, win9x included the avast update is very good, with just one occurrence of some win9x users experiencing any problem. So if you haven’t already done so you should be OK as I haven’t noticed any update issues for win98 users relating to this update.
Or for the future you could delay it for a short time and monitor the forums and see if any win98 users have any problems.
OK, except now I’m not getting the auto install message any more. Should I just get the program upgrade from Avast’s Web siteand not uninstall anything first?
Or maybe I’ll get the auto install message again sometime.
Beth
You can just right-click on the avast icon in your system tray (near the clock) > updates > program update.
You can follow t|s suggestion or, if you want, download the new version of the setup and run it.
No need to uninstall the previous version. Of course, uninstalling it and installing from the scratch won’t hurt, on contrary, you’ll have a ‘clean’ installation.
I did the auto install, and my old computer did a proper shutdown after. So everything’s fine. Thanks. Beth
Ok. Glad that everything is ok. 8)
