Installation problem; Result blinking startup screen

Looking for any advice.

I installed the home edition and clicked ok for an initial boot scan. I clicked Reboot and then nothing.
The machine restarted and I only got a black screen with a blinking cursor.
I’ve tried forced restarting and still the same thing.
I left it running 8 hours and no change.

Is this how the boot scan works? Help!!!

I’m running Vista and have had no problems previously.

No, that is definitely not how it works.
Are you on a 32-bit or 64-bit vista?
It could be scanning but not showing up on the monitor.
How big is your hard drive? 8 hours is way to long even for large hard drives.

Which was you old antivirus, before avast?

The boot-time scan should display a screen of its own, see image1 initial screen and image2 after a detection.

Thanks for the quick replys.

I’m running 32 bit with about 1tb of hard drive space.
However, the computer never did get to the boot scan screen.
It just stayed black after restart with a blinking cursor.
I assume something must have gone wrong in the root request to run the boot scan and now vista is not loading.

Any suggestions?
Will repairing from the original Vista install disk work? Or am I stuck with a reinstall.

Thanks.

Try, before, just choosing “Last known good” option in the boot options (press F8 while booting).
Did you have any other antivirus in this computer before avast?

No other antivirus software was running on this system.

And right now, what happens?
Does the boot time scanning run continuously, each boot?
Can’t you boot in safe mode?

What happens now is this; I restart, and I only get to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner of the screen.
I never get to the screen that indicates a boot scan is happening.

Bad…
Can you try booting while keeping the F8 key pressed?

Maybe the only solution will be the rescue CDs.
Read the instructions, download and burn (maybe from another computer), finally use one of this rescue CD’s:

  1. Avira
  2. Kaspersky
  3. BitDefender
  4. F-Secure
  5. Dr. Web
