Installing Avast 5 killed my computer

Anyone else had this problem, I have been using avast for a long time without issues, and I got a message through about re-registering as happens every year. Re-registered and it installed avast! 5, since then windows opens up on to the desktop and then nothing works, I’ve just reset the defaults from the boot menu (big mistake now it wants me to re-register my windows). Now I can’t get to do anything on my PC, lucky I’m on call so have my work laptop for 2 days.
Anyone help, as it seemed to install a virus and not anti-virus, am using Zone alarm free firewall.

have you been victim of a rough antivirus program perhaps?

download install update and do a quick scan with malwarebytes.

or/and superantispyware.

it its not that a installation from scratch of avast might work.

good luck and write back how it goes for you, or if you need more help.

thanks for notify me there:)

Thanks for the advice but I can’t get access to anything on my PC it just loads up the desktop and then nothing happens when you click on the icons, I was trying to remove avast from my computer but I can’t as I cannot get access to the ‘Change or remove programs’ nor access to the internet to scan the computer.
I am suspecting that I may have downloaded a bad copy of avast but I clicked the link that popped up on my computer, probably should have gone through the website.
Now I have a dead computer

can you start in Safe mode ? http://www.avast.com/en-eu/uninstall-utility

I am suspecting that I may have downloaded a bad copy of avast
it could be malware blocking the install...

Tried to get my PC to open in safe mode but couldn’t find it, and as I crashed the computer to try and get my computer to offer the safe mode option but didn’t work, looks like I’m gonna have to take into a shop to get it sorted

Which OS are you using…?
Which other security related software is installed on that machine…?
Here’s info about safe mode for XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222
In safe mode use this: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
Uninstall ZoneAlarm, as it can bring troubles to avast…!
Download and install the latest build of avast…! (5.0.545)
