I’ve just downloaded Avast anti virus, the free home version. After downloading I got a message about some conflicts with Zone Alarm, which I use as my firewall. I got a message about turning off “the transparent proxy mode of the Web Shield” and began to try and follow the pages and options that appeared. I’m afraid I got lost. I’m sorry I just didn’t understand what I was being asked - things like browsing for a new IPS, or something like that. I had to go out for a hour and hoped to keep working at this when I got home, but when I did these pages of instruction were off my screen and the program seems to just have installed. Now I can’t get access to my E-mail program Outlook Express and lots of other weird things are happening.I can’t even find out how to get back to those instructions which I can’t understand
Can anyone help me out? I’d like to use Avast. A tech at work put me on to it and right away I caught the Trojan my old anti-virus had been missing.
I have been having somewhat similar problems getting finance.yahoo.com to show my portfolios in their MarketTracker. I can see real-time quotes in the ordinary pages at finance.yahoo, but no portfolios appear in MarketTracker. I was in the process of complaining to Yahoo (since its a paid service) when I thought to disable the Web Shield provider in Avast Home Edition.
Eureka! problem dissappears immediately. When I re-enable Avast Web Shield it again blocks the real-time quote updates to my portfolio from yahoo.finance.
Any way to enable the real time quotes and keep AVAST Web Shield running?
I assume that you have Zone Alarm Pro as it is only that programs Privacy function that conflicts with the web shield proxy.
If you are using ZoneAlarm Pro and Privacy Control in ZoneAlarm is set to High and if you click YES in avast compatibility dialogue box the transparent mode proxy in web shield will be turned off you have to manually configure browser to access internet. To manually configure your browser watch instructional video, see links below.
Use a text editor and edit the avast4.ini file, the default installation location is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini (I would advise you copy avast4.ini before editing it, just in case).
If you answered incorrectly, Locate the line containing ZoneAlarmCompatibility= and delete that line (avast will ask again, answer YES) or change the value to =1. Save the edited avast4.ini file.
Thanks for the reply. I don’t have Zone Alarm Pro just the free edition so can’t imagine what the problem is. All I know is I can no longer use my e-mail.
As for my two entries. I wrote my question once then realized I had put it in the wrong category. Realizing my mistake I then put it into the proper one. I have no interest in causing any propblems, rather I thought I was doing what I should do to prevent that.
You shouldn’t have been asked the compatibly question if you have ZA free as the installation should be able to recognise the free version.
What version of avast are you using as this check was refined on earlier avast program updates (the latest is 4.7.1043) ?
However, that isn’t too important you nee to ensure that the avast4.ini file, ZoneAlarmCompatibility= value is set to 0 (zero) as you shouldn’t need to disable the transparent proxy, nor should you need to manually set your browser/s to use the proxy.
Did you check the ZA Program Control as I suggested (and take any required action) in my note 2. ?
Not a problem on the duplicate post, my post was to avoid anyone responding to what was a redundant topic. For the future, you will notice a Modify button on all your posts, this allows for editing content in a post (only moderators can delete posts/topics) in the duplication case “edit: content removed wrong forum” or “Edit: content removed, duplicate post, etc.”
Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.
If the entries are already there, just delete them and try to work (email, browse…) waiting for ZA to ask permissions again.
Don’t need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
I got rid of Norton Ant-Virus this week and installed Avast Home. Excellent program! I was asked, however, the compatibilty question during installation even though I have Zone Alarm Free.

You shouldn’t have been asked the compatibly question if you have ZA free as the installation should be able to recognise the free version.
Since 4.7.892 version of September 25, 2006, avast gets improved detection of ZoneAlarm Pro (to prevent unnecessary WebShield incompatibility warnings). So, if you’re using ZA free, you shouldn’t see the avast! Web Shield compatibility dialog while installing/updating avast.
Anyway, if the question appears and you are using ZoneAlarm Free you should click NO, because privacy features are not present in ZoneAlarm Free this will not turn off webshield transparent mode proxy.
Or you can use a text editor and edit the avast4.ini file, the default installation location is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini (I would advise you copy avast4.ini before editing it, just in case). Locate the line containing ZoneAlarmCompatibility= and delete that line or, if you want to keep this line, set it to 0. Save the edited avast4.ini file. In the ‘Installed Providers’ panel in the ‘On-Access Scanner’ I see that all programs are running apart from ‘Outlook/Exchange’ which I don’t have. Is all now well?
Most probably.
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
Then, please, post the last 100-150 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
I’m a pretty dumb guy. I’m trying to reply to David who was answering my question of a couple of days back but can’t seem to figure how to reply to him directly or at least directly to his response. He had said that with the home version of Zone Alarm I should not have been asked all those questions about changing “transparent proxy mode of the web shield” when I installed Avast. He asked, as well, what version of Avast I have downloaded. It’s 4.7. I hope, David that you see this.
Good news for me is that I have been able to solve my problem, which was primarily that my e-mail had stopped working since I downloaded Avast. Problem was mine. I had gone through several steps to uninstall my old anti-virus program, AVG, but finally found that much of it was still there. It was quite a coup for a guy like me who has little experience in this area, but I finally found the old AVG setup and there was an uninstall option that really worked. Once I did that, no more problems.
Actually I’d like to blame the computer tech at where I work. He was the one who recommended Avast. I realized my computer had become a Zombie and AVG was not solving the problem; it kept saying my computer was virus free. He told me that Avast would do a “boot check” and that’s where the Trojan would likely be. Well, that’s where I found it. So, thanks to Avast. He did say though not to bother unistalling AVG until I had already installed Avast. I suspect that may have led to the problem.
That brings me to one more question. When I downloaded Avast I was given that option of words to the effect: “Do you want a boot time scan?” on my tech friend’s instructions I clicked “yes” and got that. There was my computer, in what I took to be pre-Windows-installed DOS[?] font, scanning away. And this is where the Trojan was revealed. Problem is, now that I have Avast installed I can’t see where I’d have the option to do that again. If that tech guy was right the ability to do this kind of scan is a great asset of Avast.
right click the “a” icon, select start avast antivirus. When the simple user interface opens, right click anywhere on the skin. You can select boottime scan from the menu.
Click your profile button (on all forum pages) from there look at ‘Show the last posts of this person’ and you can find your topics and posts.
Your right in one aspect he shouldn’t have told you just to leave your old AVG installed.
Having two resident scanners installed is not recommended as rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable. So this appears to be the conflict mentioned.
You shouldn’t need to do a boot-time scan except where you have a problem that can’t be dealt with whilst windows is running, infection detected but can’t be moved to the chest because, it is either in use or protected. Then avast may suggest a boot-time scan, if not, Right click the avast icon, select Start avast! Antivirus, Menu, ‘Schedule boot-time scan…’
