I have a brand new laptop, an Asus G75VW-DS71, I originally installed the Avast! Antivirus Pro software before I received the Intel/McAfee Anti-Theft Service app.
Since I have done so, my Avast! Antivirus Pro has stopped working. This obviously is because of the Anti-Theft software has caused my Antivirus is not working. Is it really this problematic that Intel allows a company like McAfee which seems to not want any other Antivirus software on it’s computer except it’s own? Or am I overstepping my bounds in my assumptions?
If so or not, is there a way to fix this, because I have been using Avast! for a long time, and I refuse to use McAfee because I don’t like McAfee’s footprint. I was hoping that when I bought this Anti-Theft app from Intel, I was buying Intel’s version and not McAfee’s version… since this seems to be impossible, I would like to find a way to make both the Avast! and the Intel Anti-Theft app to work together, or at least work in a symbiotic nature together.
I have attempted to post this problem on Intel’s website/forum but it seems I am not “Authorized” to do so… so if someone here can help me it would be greatly appreciated.
I’ve already attempted to adjust my Local Security Policy, and Uninstall and Re-install Avast… but nothing seems to work.
I never said I installed McAfee Antivirus, although I uninstalled McAfee the first thing I did when I got this laptop anyway, because I prefer Avast over McAfee anyway. And yes it was completely uninstalled.
On a side note, before I installed the Anti-Theft software, Avast was working perfectly.
One way to get two security programs to run together is to go into each and allow exceptions in both for one to allow the other to run. For example, one would go into avast! and go to File System Shield Settings and enter in the McAfee executable that avast! would block and then in McAfee settings set an exclusion for avast!
In avast! File System Shield Settings>Exclusions enter the McAfee executable there and vice versa in McAfee for avast! executable.
You may not be able to do this in normal admin mode, so use Safe Mode to do this, where neither is active and running at the same time.
Ummm… I’m not using McAfee antivirus… and Avast seemed to work well till I installed the Intel Anti-Theft App, which is controlled by McAfee… why would I need to make an exception for the Intel App, when it’s Avast that isn’t working?
Sorry, I thought it was clear enough that you were not running McAfee antivirus, but rather, the Intel Anti-Theft App. I did use McAfee when I meant Intel, sorry for the error.
If you go into Safe Mode you may be able to get into the Intel app and configure it to allow avast! to run. If that works, then reboot into Safe Mode again, and configure avast! to ignore the Intel app. Most security apps have this sort of settings within them, not at all knowledgeable per what the Intel executable is.
In Safe Mode, you must manually start the security app; it will not start on it’s own, so this means whatever conflict you have in normal desktop user mode should not be present when operating in Safe Mode. You should be able to get avast! to run there if you need to set an ignore setting within it for Intel.
If none of the exclusions work, there is still the possibility to remove avast! and then,
re-install it using the compatibility mode when doing a custom install.
Tried, no go… the Intel software is not playing nice with the Avast software. Funny enough, I tried using McAfee Internet Security, which came with the machine, and the Intel software wouldn’t even install, even though it was “brought to me by McAfee”… I think their latest build is bad…
How did you originally uninstall McAfee ??? It has a removal tool which needs to be used or the remainders of McAtee can be the reason for your current problems.
