Internet Explorer malfuctions with avast

We installed (pushed) out netclients to our mixed mode windows 2003 SBS domain, we have 20 clients. and we’re currently working on seeing if this is the product we’re going to use for our business.

However, we’ve got issues with two windows XP netclients, ever since the install, active pages, as well as the navigation bar on www.avast.com do not work, they are simply blank. They worked before we installed avast (yesterday) then today, none of these pages work, but they work on all the other desktops.

Now on both of these computers, we can load up firefox, and everything is fine, but it doesn’t load avast before launching.

We really want to find a solution but thsi is a setback for us using Avast

More info

Here are some of the sites that don’t work w/ a short desc of problem below them

Blank page, nothing loads since avast install

http://www.avast.com
Navigation bar gone

Tells us we’re using an “incompatible browser” and we’re running ie 6 sp1 on xp, and that we’re veiwing everything in HTML only

No problems accessing with FF or IE6 could this be a webshield conflict with your firewall perhaps. Left click the Avast icon select webshield - select customize - select advanced - tick show detailed info on performed action then try to access the sites again. You should get a small popup showing the progress of the download. Does it hang at any portion of the web page.

Well after jumping through a number of security hoops (I have IE locked down as I don’t use it as my default), I did get pages to load in IE for all your links whether they were the correct pages.

  1. https Chandler Logon page.
  2. avast home page.
  3. v5.windowsupdate page
  4. https google logon page.

Also no problems with firefox, so either your browser security settings are too tight or there may be a problem with web shield and your firewall (but if that was the case it may be affecting all pages), but it looks like a redirection problem as all the links bar the avast one redirect to a different url.

Are you using Zone Alarm Pro?
Did you have to set-up the web shield manually?
What version of avast are you using the latest is 4.6.665?
Temporarily disable Web Shield and see if you can access the pages?
Check with a different browser firefox or Avant (an IE based browser) and see if you can access these pages, if so it probably isn’t web shield that is the problem?

Your IE is not up to date so you should ensure both your OS and browser are up to date (as soon as you can get into windows update)

ok i figured it out, somehow and i was incorrect saying it was 2 xp machines its was 1 xp with ie 6 and 1 2k with ie 6 both had the EXACT same problems

i re-installed Microsoft Scripting

Now all the above websites work correctly.

The only thing that changed on these machines is I pushed the netclient to all of our desktops and these 2 had it. Might be something to look into?

Are you using Zone Alarm Pro?
NO
Did you have to set-up the web shield manually?
Yes i tried that

Temporarily disable Web Shield and see if you can access the pages?
Yes, i even un-installed Avast.
Check with a different browser firefox or Avant (an IE based browser) and see if you can access these pages, if so it probably isn't web shield that is the problem?
Yes i thought i specified that, that all pages work fine in firefox
Your IE is not up to date so you should ensure both your OS and browser are up to date (as soon as you can get into windows update)

i’m running is 6 SP2 (i mistakenly said sp1) and there is no other newer version, unless you know of some super secret version taht isn’t public

Sorry me not reading it thoroughly enough that you had tried it and it worked with firefox.

Re updates, there have been a number of newsletters mentioning updates, not to mention it was patch Tuesday 2 days ago and there are meant to be some security updates.

Glad you have things resolved anyway.
