When i am sending an e-mail with an atachment using thunderbird when it reaches 100% of sending a message it stops when i do this with the internet mail provider off it works fine why is the internet mail provider stopping me from sending e-mails.
Which is the extension of the attached file?
Which is your operational system?
Here you can see more about timeouts into Internet Mail provider and your email account: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=11380.msg96646#msg96646
I have XP home and i don’t know what you mean by extension of atached file.
It sounds like you are using an email program (maybe Thunderbird) that has a progress bar.
The change you are seeing is a result of the way Avast works.
When Avast is not involved you see the gradual movement of the progress bar as your message is sent to your mail server. I assume you also get a final “Message sent successfully” message or something similar.
When Avast is scanning the mail your email program is “fooled” into thinking it is talking to the server when in fact the mail is just being sent to Avast inside your system to be scanned. Bacause this happens inside your system you see the progress bar move very quickly to 100%.
At that point Avast has scanned the message and Avast then takes over the job of sending the message blocks on to your mail server. When Avast has finished sending it passes back the final “ok” from the mail server to you email client - which should still give you the “Message sent successfully” response.
If this is not happening in your case (when you have allowed it the time to send the message) what error message are you seeing, oh, and what is your mail program?
I use thunderbird and i see no error message it just stops when it reaches 100%
Then what happens next with Thunderbird? You mean it just stays like that forever?
yes
Are you using a firewall, if so is ashMaiSv.exe authorized to send to the network?
everything in avast is authorized.
At the beginning of this thread you said that this problem occurs when you send a message with an attachment and with the Internet Mail provider on.
Are you unable to send any messages with the Internet Mail provider on or is the problem just when you send an attachment?
only when i send an atachment.
What kind of file is the attachment and how big is it?
it is an executable file but since i can’t send an executable file by itself i put it into a zipped folder it is about 920 kb
Ooopps - sending again
To understand better what is happening with Avast when you send this message some more detailed information needs to be collected.
I suggest that you created a more detailed log of what the Internet Mail Provider is doing and post the log here.
To do this you would need to use your favorite edit program (like Notepad) to edit the file:
C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini
Within the file in the section headed by:
[MailScanner]
Add the line:
Log=20
Save the updated file.
Stop and start again the Internet Mail provider and try sending your email with attachment again.
When you have finished the test please post the log file from:
C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4\DATA\Log\avMaiSv.log
After the test you should edit the avast4.ini file again as above and remove the Log=20 line.
i have no idea how to edit the log or anything.
the only log i even found similar to the one you mentioned was avast 4 configuration settings.
The log I asked for is not normally created.
It is just used to get more diagnostic information but the edit of the avast4.ini file is needed to turn it on.
Is it just this particular attachment that is getting hung up? Have you tried sending any other large files?
i have tried to send different atachments and much larger files.
But did they work, that is what we are after.
