avast build: 4.7.942
system: W98SE
mail: Thunderbird version 1.5.0.9 (20061207)
I completely disabled Internet Mail resident provider, using “terminate” in options window. In On-Access Scanner I have “No task is currently using this provider”. But despite that, it is still working. ashMaisv.exe is still among startup processes. It scans my incoming and outgoing mail (there is an icon in tray). When I change my server details to standard, avast changes them back to work with mail scanner.
Before you ask, why I want to disable it - I don’t. At first, I just wanted to disable scanning of outgoing mail. I unchecked the option “scan outbound mail” under “Resident task settings”, but it did not work. Option was inactive but scanner worked without any change.
Of course ashMaisv.exe can be removed from the registry manually and it will not work anymore, but that’s not a solution to my problem. I want it to work - but only for my INCOMING mail. So it would be great if the authors could fix at least the deactivation of OUTGOING mail scanner.
When you use Terminate, you are asked a question, do you want to persist the change answer Yes otherwise on reboot it will be back.
If you did and it still comes back I really can’t understand how this could be happening. If I pause the internet mail provider and check my mail, I still get the ashmaisv.exe icon in the tray but it isn’t scanning but still passing through the proxy. If I terminate the internet mail provider and check my mail, I get no ashmaisv.exe icon in the tray.
Now I’m using OE but it should make no difference to use thunderbird. Did you make any manual changes to thunderbird to use the avast internet mail proxy ?
Why did you want to disable outbound scanning, perhaps we can help in that area ?
The Internet Mail Provider is an avast! resident provider and it is not just the corresponding service. If you have Internet Mail running and stop the “avast! Mail Scanner” service, you disable the scanning of e-mails, but you don’t turn the provider into “stopped” state (rather “waiting for a subsystem to start”). Similarly, if Internet Mail is stopped, you cannot start it just by starting the “avast! Mail Scanner” service.
On contrary, ashMaisv.exe is the service, it will be running in background but the emails won’t be scanned if the provider is off.
Could I make myself clear… sometimes I think I spoke to much technically :-\
And I just found out it is even more ridiculous. I manually removed ashMaisv.exe from the “Run” list. I rebooted the computer and guess what? It is back in the registry, runs in the background and of course has again overwritten my mail server details…
And all the time: “two providers total, 1 running” (standard shield). In options: “Internet Mail” - “No task is currently using this provider”.
They surely know how viruses work and how to write them, but do they really have to include them it their software? I would believe without it.
It is useless in my opinion (please don’t argue with that, as I would like to remain ontopic here).
It’s not ridiculous it’s working perfectly as designed to…
How are set your avast! services?
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner service)
Disable the service for stop scanning emails…
Small advise when seeking help don’t bite those that are trying to help, many of those helping (are avast users) and are doing so in a language not their mother language. So there can be misinterpretation or information given, this doesn’t detract from the fact they are trying to help.
avast has an integrity check, self repair that may well be repairing your tweaks.
You could try add remove programs, select avast! Antivirus, click Change/Remove, a pop-up window will display, the change icon should be highlighted, click Next.
Here you will see the Resident protection, uncheck the Internet Mail provider, see image, click next and follow to complete the process.
You changed registry settings not in avast but integral to it and that too I would assume is checked for integrity, only an assumption though, I’m just an avast user ;D.
I used the “Change” from “Add/Remove Programs”. Unfortunately, there is no integrity checker or self repair module there. With this option you can just uninstall single service (instead of the whole program). So I uninstalled “Internet Mail”, rebooted, installed it again and rebooted again. This process did not remove any registry keys - it was already configured as before.
And it gets funnier and funnier. avast did not add ashMaisv.exe to “Run” in the registry. I added it manually, rebooted. And this time Internet Mail does NOT work, despite being enabled:
“The provider is currently running”
“2 providers total, 2 running”
ashMaisv.exe is running
INCOMING mail is not scanned
avast did not change “server settings” in Thunderbird.
So now it acts completely opposite to that what it was doing before.
I haven’t got a clue what is going on with your system, in almost three years on the forums this is the first I have heard of this.
Your comment about it not changing the server settings reminded me you are using win98se, when you installed avast first of all I assume you ran the Mail Protection Wizard (MPW) or Manually changed the server settings to use the Internet Mail proxy ?
I can’t recall how thunderbird reacts if the MPW will change the settings or if you have to do it manually. In any case the server settings if set back to the default settings either manually or trying the MPW to remove protection if it works with thunderbird. This would have the effect of stopping avast scanning email because it isn’t using the proxy. Even if the ashMaiSv.exe was enabled and running.
When you were trying to terminate the internet mail did you run the MPW to remove protection ?
