Internet Security - Firewall - Can't stay connected to default gateway [Solved]

I have been using Avast for years with no issues. Suddenly my Win10 pc will not stay connected to the internet via wifi and it seem the firewall stops my connection to my default gateway in someway.

I can uninstall the firewall component and use Windows built-in firewall and have zero issues and never lose connectivity. As soon as i turn Avast Firewall back on I will lose connectivity to the internet. I have tried completely removing and resetting my wifi adapters, rebooting the modem/router. There is another Win10 pc on my home network and it had one such occurrence for a day but seems to resolved itself yet my pc still has issues. I have the latest 18.1.2.2326 version of Avast.

What would Avast Support need for me todo to troubleshoot this? I’d much prefer to turn Avast Firewall back on and not use Windows Defender.

Thank you in advance

  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

Windows 10 Pro 64bit, Version 1709 OS Build 16299.248
Malware Bytes
I’ve used Avast Internet Security for Id guess 2-3 years and never had an issue until recently and do not recall previous AV.

Interestingly the other laptop using wifi also has Avast and isn’t affected.

I hae been running windows defender firewall for 24 hours and this afternoon experienced a single occurence of the same drop from the default gateway. The firewall profile switches from private to public, i see warnings or DNS server unavailable, websites stop working and the wifi adapter will say “connected” “no internet”.

I found these system events that seem to proceed the issue

Event 4003, WLAN-AutoConfig
WLAN AutoConfig detected limited connectivity, attempting automatic recovery.

Recovery Type: 4
Error Code: 0x0
Trigger Reason: 12
IP Family: 4

Then a

Event 8000, NETwNe64
The description for Event ID 8000 from source NETwNe64 cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

\Device\NDMP2
Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6205

The specified resource type cannot be found in the image file

Followed by a bunch of DNS Client events “Name resolution for the name browser.“XYZ” timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded”

PS: Regarding Avast & MBAM, see: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/200324-exclusions-for-avast-users/

Thanks. I upgraded to 18.2.2328 late last night, turned off Windows Defender Firewall, started up Avast Firewall , rebooted and before I could even completely login to windows my network adapter was 'connected, no internet" and i was on an unidentified network w/o internet access. I’ll add the exclusions to avast and malware bytes from the suggested article and try to turn defender off and spin up Avast Firewall again and see what happens.

You’re welcome.

Followed the exclusion settings for both malware bytes and avast along with the latest Avast upgrade. When I turn on the Avast firewall and reboot, the pc connects to an “unidentified network - no internet” status on the wifi and I never am able to connect to the internet. I tried turning off the firewall and it still remains unable to connect. If i uninstall the avast firewall component, reboot and let Windows defender handle the firewall, I have no issues.

I have no idea what to do at this point to continue troubleshoot. Anyone have a suggestion? Thank you

  1. Download Avast Internet Security: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup_offline.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Thanks again. I’ll give it a try later today.

WOW. I think this worked perfectly. I followed exactly as instructed and so far I can connect to the internet and remain connected. The only thing I notice is that it automatically identified my home network as “public” but I can’t see thats necessarily a bad thing. I’ll report back in a few days. Thank you for the help.

You’re welcome.
