This has been mentioned before so I’m not sure if I should have used an existing thread…
Here’s the problem: Running Outlook 2007 with Avast IS 7 the junk mail filter setting is changed to ‘Off’ every time I start Outlook - whatever level I change it to, it just goes back to ‘off’… I did open a ticket with Support and was told to completely remove and reinstall the program. However, it still happens. The Mail Shield and Spam Filter don’t seem to be scanning anything at all. Anyone else having this problem with a similar setup? (Win 7 x64 OS, Office 2007, all up to date).
Im glad that somebody else is having exactly the same problem as i am,
Im in an office with xp workstations and windows 7 workstations, the windows xp work fine but the windows 7(64bit) the mail scanner does nothing at all and it disables the outlook junk mail filter just as you describe. Im sure theres a compatability issue somewhere with windows 7(64bit).
I am slightly different to you in that i have office 2010 on the windows 7 workstations, so its obviously not a ms office issue, but a windows 7 issue, or 64bit operating system issue.
Roger, when you open outlook does a splash screen briefly display showing ‘MS Avast outlook plugin’? as mine doesnt, it should do, as it does on the xp machines
Ok, sorry about that, will you be updating the EPS plus aswell? as ive just followed the link and installed the pro antivirus, and the mail scanner seems to be fixed.
First of all - update to v7.0.1451 did not solve the issue. After the update, the filter still got reset, and the Mail Shield/Antispam did nothing… I stopped the Antispam module and - no more resetting. However - Outlook kept crashing with an error message indicating that the add-in ‘Avast Add In’ was the culprit (“Outlook has encountered a serious problem with the add-in ‘Avast Add In’. If you have seen this message before you should disable this add-in” (or something to that extent)). There was also no Avast Junk Mail Filter toolbar visible.
So I did a little research, and here’s what I found:
Avast seems to have installed 2 add-ins: One shows simply as ‘Avast Add In’, the other as ‘Avast Antispam’. Both point to the same file: 'C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast\asOutExt.dll. (In the same directory is another DLL (asOutExt64.dll).
I disabled both add ins and re-enabled the Antispam module. At next Outlook start the Junk filter did not reset . So I removed both add ins, leaving the Antispam (and Mail Shield) running. No more problems at next Outlook start - the Toolbar showed and, even though both add ins had been removed, the Mail Shield and Antispam module both showed as up and running…
I then added the add in back. The asOutExt.dll file only let me add the ‘Avast Add In’ back. At next start up the filter got reset again, and Outlook crashed with the same error as above.
That’s it for now. Apologies for the long post - my guess is it has something to do with the add ins running on an x64 system…
Turning off the junk mail filtering is ok. When you have running avast antispam, you should not need outlook antispam. Reinstall will not help.
Only if antispam is not running when outlook is starting, then junk filtering level will not be changed.
Are they running? Is any activity in their statistics?
Can you try this new dlls? http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=100302.0
And if it did not help, could you send me debug log? (in settings->maintenance->enable debug log, then make the outlook crash and send me C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log\asoutext.log)
Can you describe me more exactly when the crash occur?
If you have two outlook add-ins, it is wrong. You should have two dlls, AsOutExt and AsOutExt64. Both of them are only one add-in called avast! addin. Add-in with name Avast! Antispam is obsolete and it probably somehow remained from a previous avast installation. Loading both of them will certainly cause the crash of outlook.
That’s resolved now. I would assume the other one might have been left from an older version. After I had gone through disabling/enabling/re-disabling those add-ins via Trust Center I only had one left - the ‘Antispam’ was gone.
I’ll try to get a debug log as soon as I have a moment. Have noticed through that there are plenty of others with the same issue (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=100302.0). That is exactly the same as mine… Thanks for your email, btw!
