Is a reboot required for updates once every 10 days?

I have a Windows XP computer running Avast 4.8 that I do Avast updates about once a week to 10 days.
Sometimes the updates are larger than 2 million bytes. Do I need to reboot when the updates are that large?

Thanks

Why you dont install Avast 5

I agree, no point discussing issues about 4.8 when it would be better to be running the 5 version, it’s been out for nearly ten month’s. Would also be safer to have your updates set to auto as well because there’s usually two a day. Download new avast and removal tool then delet old avast and reboot then run removal tool in safe mode and reboot then install new version, you can also install new over old but i prefer to do clean install’s, less issue’s

Aside from the obvious updating to avast5 (support for 3.8 is due to cease at the end of the year). The avast5 virus signature database is actually smaller than the 4.8 database and is more efficient.

But it also begs the question why update only every 10 days, the auto updates are incremental for the VPS and are measured in KB rather than MB, so shouldn’t get in the way.

To answer your question though, VPS updates shouldn’t require a reboot, it isn’t a size issue only if processes might have changed (as in a program update) would you need to reboot and you would normally be informed as part of the update.

Thanks to all of you who replied. The reason I update Avast on such an infrequent schedule is because the pc is protected by Faronics Deep Freeze and I only thaw it every 10 days or so. I also use their whitelist software – Anti-Executable. Viruses and malware are the least of my worries. I mainly use Avast to scan things I might want to download and keep. Avast 4.8 works for me for now.

Thanks again.

You’re welcome.
