Is my anti-virus activated

I’m having some difficulty with the avast! 4 that I’ve just downloaded. I installed my previous virus guard - Kaspersky - before downloading avast!4 but I am receiving an error message from Windows Security Centre stating that avast anti virus reports that it is turned off as it detected that the Kaspersky anti virus is running.
I’ve searched Windows explorer to try to find any residual Kaspersky program to uninstall without success.
The avast ball in the toolbar is blue so it appears to be ok.
Could anyone tell me how to :

  1. start avast if it’s not already activated
  2. address the “error” message problem
  3. find and get rid of any residual Jaspersky program
Any help will be much appreciated
    Thanks

avast disables elements if it finds other resident scanners (often remnants left behind), so that a conflict that could lock your system doesn’t occur. The remnants are foten registry keys and virtual device drivers.

Run this utility to remove all traces of Kaspersky from the registry:

ICE is a US distributor for Kaspersky.

Before you can address any of the others you have to complete your step three. Then reboot avast should hopefully start correctly as it doesn’t detect Kaspersky.

After followin David’s advices, if you need trouble with Windows Security Center, please, just post again or check http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=23457.msg193534#msg193534

Can you try to repair your installation? Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Thanks for all the advice.

First I ran the utility then I searched in system 32 and found a Kaspersky klmc and klif file - deleted these - re-booted and everything’s all working now!

Your comments have been a great help ! Superb. ;D
