Is my internet mail being scanned?

When I hover the mouse over the system tray icon, 6 out of 7 providers are running. When I right-click avast! in the system tray, I see that 6 providers can be paused or stopped. They include ‘internet mail’. Should a 7th provider be listed?? If so, what is it?? Is email scanning taking place??

I send and receive emails through Outlook Express 6 using POP3 and SMPT. There seems to be no indication that incoming and outgoing email is being scanned. When I used AVG 7.5, animated pop-ups from the system tray indicated scanning. At the bottom of each email, a message verified that it contained no virus.

Using avast!, there is no indication of active scanning, nor verification that emails are virus-free.

Does this mean that email scanning is not enabled, although there is an option to pause or stop the internet mail provider?

If email scanning is not enabled, how can I enable this?

I searched through settings and help. The latter suggested clicking Start, All Programs, avast!, then mail wizard to configure. However, no mail wizard shows here.

I run Windows XP SP2, and use avast! 4.8 and Outlook Express for email.

Apart from these mysteries, I really appreciate avast! Ongoing scanning of emails was one of the reasons that I considered shifting from AVG to avast!

Is email scanning enabled? Can I expect to see an email scanning indicator, virus-free verification, a mail wizard or the listing of a seventh provider in the system tray menu?

Regards, Phil

Hi plohrey!

You only see 6 providers which can be stopped, because only 6 providers are running - normally the "Outlook/Exchange"-provider only starts if MS Office Outlook/Exchange is started... so thats OK.

To check if E-Mails are being scanned open, while downloading E-Mails, the On-Access-Window by doubleclicking the Avast-Symbol in the system tray…
If you click on “Internet Mail” you should see the mails being scanned!
(you have to go to the ‘Advanced Settings’)

At the bottom of each email, a message verified that it contained no virus.
You can enable this function by going to the On-Access-Window --> Internet Mail --> customize --> Write Info in clean E-Mail...

avast does not - by default - insert any “clean message” in your received or sent emails. You can choose to have such obvious “clean message” inserted into the body of received and send emails in the Internet Mail provider.

avast does - by default - insert an X-Antivirus header line in emails that have scanned. The header line is not normally seen but if you ask your email client to show all the headers in your received email you will see two lines like this in each scanned message:

X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 080429-1, 04/29/2008), Inbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

Similar lines will be in outbound scanned messages (but they will not be seen by you because they are inserted as the mail is being transmitted).

Thanks so much, ‘onlysomeone’ and ‘alanrf’, for your quick, helpful response.

Now that I’ve followed your advice, I can see my inbound and outbound emails being scanned - with the attractive additional icon in the system tray. I can verify that incoming mail is virus-free - with written notification at the bottom of each email. I understand that my friends will receive this reassurance as well.

I changed from AVG 8 to avast! 4.8 for the additional protection: antispyware and antirootkill functions; also for ongoing email scanning. Now, I’m completely happy with user-notification as well. The ‘avist’ skin that I downloaded from the website is very classy, with the added attraction for beginners of words like ‘update’ accompanying the attractive buttons. No problems with system drain or performance of any function. Thank you avist! for marvellous freeware and related forum!

It’s good to know that if help is really needed, it is there…

Kind regards from Phil

you’re welcome and thank you for your accolade!

You can bet it
