Hello,
I am looking for a way to allow Avast to run unattended so that I can let it run overnight while I am sleeping. Unfortunately, the way that it is set up now, if a virus is identified, the system pauses while it asks me what to do with the file. I think the best way to handle this would be to send all files to the chest, and I can then go back and take them out of the chest if they really do not belong there after the whole scan is completed.
Is there a way that I can do this? I looked for a setting that seemed right, but could not find one.
What version of avast are you using, Home or Pro? The option you looking for is only available in the Pro version of avast!
In the Home version, you can check the option “Don’t show this window again” when in shows up when the first virus is found, and then you click on the button “No action”. When you do this, the scan continues, and you will at the end of the scan, see the results of the scan and on that list you can perform actions.
Darn it all…shoulda guessed that would be a feature of the pay version. To tell you the truth, that might just be enough to get me to shell out for the pay version (and you say, ‘that is sort of … The Idea’). The workaround is also a good idea…I will use that until I decide.
Another little trick so you don’t have to wait long for a first detection (Over time this will become less of an issue, as the resident, on-access scanners are designed to intercept infection before it gets into your system.) - There was one suggestion to place something like the eicar virus test file at the start of the first drive to be scanned in a file like ~a-eicar.com that should soon be detected and you can do the option “Don’t show this window again” when the first virus warning appears, select the “No action” button. So you should have a list of files waiting your action.
HeHe, people would just get more creative, a corrupt/malformed word doc that throws up a generic detection, etc. etc. ;D
Personally I can’t see why they bother, as over time it isn’t an issue with the resident scanners doing their best to keep new infections out. I also like to know what is going on on my system and be in control of any action taken.
Is there any certain place that you would recommend I put the “eicar virus test file” so that it is detected early, so that I can use this trick? I have it on my computer right now in the “C:\WINDOWS” saved as “~a-eicar.com” because it seemed like that was the first place that the “Thorough Scan” looks, but avast has already tested 90,000 files on my current scan and has not yet found it. Thanks in advance!
Well by monitoring the avast scan you should see what folder it normally starts in.
Your problem is selecting Thorough sensitivity and possibly archives also…
Thorough is also by its design very thorough (it scans all files) and perhaps a little overkill for routine use, were a Standard scan without archives should be adequate. Archive (zip, rar, etc.) files are by their nature are inert, you need to extract the files and then you have to run them to be a threat. Long before that happens avast’s Standard Shield should have scanned them and before an executable is run that is scanned.
I have only ever done a Through Scan with Archives once shortly after installation just to ensure a clean start state, but with XP for example avast will do a boot-time scan after installation if you select it, this I believe will be quicker and reasonably effective. Like everything in life things are a compromise.
No, the scanning does not follow a strict order, afaik.
The better, if you can, is getting the Pro version. But, like David said, you don’t have to run on-demand scannings that often…
