Hi
Here’s my problem. After i restart my comruter all the registry and keys for my programs are gone!!! Even Avast don’t work. Even yesterday when restarting all the drivers for the VGA, the modem, the mainboard were gone , but this happened only one time. And whats the interesting part when the drivers were gone Avast still was working but after restarting avast detected virus called Win32:Trojan-gen.{Delphi}, but after restarting avast crashed and the virus was gone!!! What shall i do now ??? I am using win98se.
Have you tried running an on-line antivirus scanner?
Try running the registry checker- open the run box and type scanregw.exe
Beginning of standard canned reply.
Update Windows. Use a firewall.
Use an Anti-Virus of your choice and keep it updated.
In Windows Explorer, set Folder Options to “show all files”.
Clean out all temp, cache, ect. files.
Download BeClean here:
http://boozet.xepher.net/beclean/
Download Sysclean from here:
http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/tsc/sysclean.com
Read this(it tells you how to use it!):
http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/tsc/readme.txt
Reboot into safe mode and run Sysclean, write down results, then reboot normally.
If offending file is in “restore” read this:

Download AdAware from here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
Read the help files, download the winsock fix, and then Update and run AdAware.
If you lose your Internet connection after running AdAware run the fix.

Download Spybot Search+Destroy here:

Update and run Spybot (enable all protection).
Download Spyware Blaster here: (enable all protection)

Run a couple of online scanners (pick a different one than your main AV):
BitDefender:
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php
Panda:

eTrust:

If the previous do not solve your problems:
Download Bazooka here:

Download KL-Detector here

Download CWShredder here

Install, run and save the log that is created. Don’t let it fix anything yet!
You can find forums to post the log to have it analyzed here:
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/
Download Stinger here:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Download eScan here:
http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/free_utilities.asp
Rename the downloaded file escan.zip and extract (with a zip program) to C:\Downloads, which you will have to create. Run the updater (kavupd.exe) and then run eScan (mwavscan.exe).

Doesn’t sound like a virus to me. Looks more like the entire OS is damaged, possibly due to a hardware error when writing to the hardddisk.
I would say, put in the 98(se) cd, boot from it and do a reinstall. When it ask where to install, let it do so in the same folder Windows is currently in. (c:\windows most likely)
OK. I will try it . I hope it will works!!!
I’ll be honest here… You guys probrably don’t recall when I mentioned in a previous post of my Win98 machine crashing out after I ran avast on it. And also stated that it was almost as if the powersupply had magically failed.
Well the funny thing is is that despite all the years I had that computer and delt with the viruses/trojans/ & worms cause I never ever ran a virus utility on it at all I still to this day carry much disbelieve that my powersupply magically , convientally quit when I ran avast on it .
I , for some reason feel as though if your system is ran over with viruses/trojans/ & worms then you might want to think a little slower when just deciding to rip the problems out all at once as , I the average Joe thought . THeres nothing to say that one of the viruses/trojans/ or worms that were on my old 98 machine wasn’t something that would’ve killed my powersupply, harddrive , etc…
The same goes for anyone else , they unless very well educated in all this stuff would allow any anti-virus utility to just delete the infected file. Of which may or may not be a file that the system relies on in order to run properly.
Ohh. yeah and for the AdAware download , you’ll find it at download.com
Download AdAware from here: who ran that site you suggested ?
To VB-
I have put avast on about 20 of my friends 98 machines and not one problem yet If your system is full of malware,a complete format is the only way to go if you ask me. All of the programs I listed in my post are the ones I use for cleaning+protection.
I thought the default for avast is to move to vault(safe method)
To Ed-
unless he has a bootable OEM 98,he will need a startup disk.

Well , I have introduced Avast to alot of my neighbors and relatives and got them a little familiar with the program as well , however , all those machines have been XP . As far as I’m aware , they’ve not endured any problems either.
My 98 machine was an oldie , low on ram , little biddie HD , and pretty much out-dated.
The safe way may be to move to the chest yet I felt pretty comfertable when I first ran it on my XP machine which was my first experience with any anti-virus utility at all . Since I’ve lived and learned , I do suggest using the chest for a new user . I’m not concerned with my old 98 machine , it sits in a closet.
Hello VB,
I run AVAST on a 98SE machine, no sweat. Even my wife on a ME with only 8 Gig runs AVAST and it saved her from a Conducent Time Sink tsadbot infection.
Never heard a complaint.
