Issues with two steam games

avast! Keeps classifying Neverwinter Nights 2: Platinum Edition and Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale as viruses when I attempt to run them. They obviously cannot be being games legitimately purchased via Steam, and I can’t seem to get avast! to stop thinking they are and let me play them without the annoying ‘you must play this in safe mode or your computer asplode!’ window from popping up. Any help?

welcome to the forum.

most likely a false threat.

send the files to avast lab, more information on how to submit is located in this link.

good luck

Part of the issue with the virus chest is that the warning comes up saying that Steam.Exe is opening the file. Do I need to put the Steam.exe in there do? Won’t that break my installation by taking part of the program out like that?

Edit: Oh, and a third game is coming up as a false positive too, Poker Night at the Inventory. Some kind of connection between those games? o.o

Don’t mean to spam, but just updating that copies of the ‘infected’ files (Steam, Recettear, Poker Night, and Neverwinter Nights 2) have been sent to the lab through my copy of avast! so hopefully this mess will be sorted out.

My frustration is hopefully understandable. These are respectable programs purchased from respectable companies for -money-. These are -not- viruses.

How long is a solution to this issue going to take? I’m trying to hold my curtness at bay, I really am, but my frustration is -palatable- at this point. Why are these games being declared viruses? Is something in the steam databases or something? Why are they being declared false positives if that is not the case?

hey.

it should only take a few days sometimes even faster. Just have to what and see. hopefully they will fix it with the next virusupdate.

Well, its been over a week now, a few virus updates, and still getting the message with all of the afformentioned games. What now?

Hello,
did you send us the file(s) to analyze?

Milos

I did, through the avast! program itself - I put them into the chest and then sent them off with the automated mailing system

Okay, this is getting stupid. I tried played a game I hadn’t played in a while (Fallout 3 GotY) and a game I hadn’t played before but had installed already before this whole mess (Farcry) and both came up with the same issue. -What the hell is going on?-. Is this some kind of sick gimmick to force free users to purchase the retail product? I certainly hope it is not.

hey agian.

no you don’t need to buy the full suite if you don’t like. but if you happy with the free you could always update if you like.

to topic:

please upload the files in question to virustotal.com and post the result here.

just to see if more is flagging those files or if just avast.

you could always send a email to avast with the files in question in a zipeed password protected file.

instruction on how to to that is in this link https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=199&nav=0,2,61.

Hehe, I think it’s a problem with the way Avast detects virus’s. I have issues with Avast always trying to sandbox games I launch via steam. XD

Though one might consider Ubisoft games to be maleware… XD
