Hi Baba, and welcome,
You’ll find quite a few other threads here which point out that the number of items is almost meaningless, especially for comparing one a-v product to another, simply because (unfortunately) there’s no standard or agreement in the “industry” as to how to count them.
I’m sure Alwil has an “official” number posted somewhere – but keep the above in mind, that it’s just one company’s interpretation of how to count them.
Best,
Mike
MikeBCda, I doubt there’s any “official” number posted anywhere - simply because of the reason you explained. Detection of one virus family may be counted as “one virus” by one antivirus, an as “500 viruses” by another - so, there’s really not any point in comparing the numbers.
You can run avast!, enter the Virus Database dialog and let all the viruses be selected (search for *) - I believe there’s a number of found items shown somewhere in the window. As I said, however, this number has hardly any sense.
Quite right, Igor, I wasn’t thinking straight (what else is new? ).
If forum members generally and the team specifically agree that the number is meaningless, it certainly wouldn’t make sense to claim that avast! detects x-many items.
I guess a whole bunch would be a fair assessment. ;D
Tnx for the answer ;D
