microsoft security essentials detects this in the porn section on thepiratebay, probably from an adserver. does anyone know anything about this threat? does avast detect it?
do you have a URL we can test? If you post it, make it unclicable by using hxxp and not http or wxw and not www
here

No detection on VT or NoVirusThanks…but there is always a risk if you download porn ;D
i was talking about the site/adservers itself, not the downloads.
I would never use anything from thepiratebay :
http://hosts-file.net/?s=thepiratebay.org&x=30&y=8 <== • EMD - sites engaged in malware distribution
This classification is assigned to website’s engaged in the distribution of malware (e.g. adware, spyware, trojans and viruses etc).
Sites with this classification typically either contain files (e.g. cracks, keygens, adware, spyware, trojans, viruses et al) or lead to such via (for example) “fake scanners” or other social engineering and misleading tactics.
Sure, there are fake torrents and some viruses inside them indeed. But, heck, most of stuff there are safe. My whole /home/myname/Videos/Anime is pretty much from there :D… That is, unless you managed to find a fake thepiratebay somewhere… stop being misleading!

If you do a search on this forum, you would see the problems that this site has caused people with malware, so we do not recommend it. However everyone is entitled to do as they wish, and if you want to go there, by all means feel free to go. ;D
Hi SafeSurf,
Yep, and when you meet with malcode there, who is to complain? You were warned in advance where you went, isn’t it? Furthermore consider that there are certain parties that frown upon certain content downloads from there (to say the least) that is why ACTA is being negotiated out, and these parties would not hinder these sites being malware ridden to say it mildly. Well users that want to go there anyway would take a calculated risk,

Perils of P2P File Sharinghttp://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/virus-trojan-spyware-help/305923-perils-p2p-file-sharing.html
Until recently, p2p file sharing was fairly safe. That’s no longer true. Malware writers are increasingly and agressively exploiting them to spread their wares. There’s a significant increase in the number of people infected via the use of P2P programs. Running any type of p2p application will make one far more prone to infection by malware. The nature of P2P filesharing is so that even if one is using a “clean” program, many of the files downloaded from non-documented sources have the potential of being infected. More than half of all files available for download from peer-to-peer networks have been deliberately infected with some form of malware. Most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup and are also configured to allow other p2p users on the same network open access to a shared directory on the computer. File sharing is based on this unfettered acces to all computers across the p2p network. It’s this practice that can make systems vulnerable not only to data and identity theft but also to becoming instrumental in the spread of malware.
I find that wandering in minefields is dangerous to ones health as well.
