Just installed - can't update anything

I can’t upgrade Avast! Free Home edition. I keep getting popups saying it can’t connect with this server or that. All I have is the virus database from the installer.

I’m using 98SE - can’t afford to buy a new OS, and can’t get Ubuntu to install, probably because of the hacking I’ve been going through. I use Firefox. Also ZoneAlarm Pro, and all needed permissions have been given.

I can upload the log file, if it’ll help. I’ve replaced personal info there with xxx.

The bottom line says it cannot connect to "download857.avast.com, which the log says later is an invalidated server. On other attempts the same failure occurs, but with a different address.

Is there, perhaps, a way around this? Like being to download the updates and install them manually? If so, where do I go to get them?

Thanks,
H. B.

Typically this is the firewall blocking avast:

Ensure that Zone Alarm allows avast.setup (which does the updates) permission to connect to the internet. If it already does, delete the entry for it and try a manual update, that should force the firewall to ask permission.

Which numeric version of Avast did you install on Win98?

It has to be 4.8.x as 5.x and 6.0 are incompatible with older OS of win9.x, winME and this would be discovered on any attempted installation.

Not necessarily. Avast 4.5, 4.6, and 4.7 are still readily available for download though may not be able to receive virus updates. As to Avast 5 and 6, many Win98 users (like me) have Windows kernel emulators installed to force compatability with newer programs. Personally, I use KernelEx but have never tried it with Avast 5/6, and still use 4.8.

Another possibility: The OP states that they use ZA Pro. I recall an issue between older versions of ZA and Avast Web Shield.

We will need more information from the OP.
