just wondering...(please reply)

i’m just wondering if avast! home free edition lasts forever.

like does it always scan and update for as long its in my computer or is there a certain time the updates stop or something? ???

thanks

Law

As long as you keep the registration current. Registration is free for home edition and lasts a year. At that time just renew the registration.

It’s my understanding that it is totally free forever. If you R-click on your icon in the systray > About avast, it should give you the specifics of your registration, along with other useful information.

I, myself, have opted for the avast! Pro along with the free Comodo firewall. Makes a terrific combo!

Hope this helps!

so as long as you keep the registration current (registering every year if you can), every thing should update and scan as long as its installed in my computer? i’m just wondering about the thing in the image below about the updates…

If you gave away a free product you might want to know if it was worth the effort to do so.

Does anyone use it? If they did use it sometime do they still do so?

In return for providing you a free product and continuing free anti-virus updates avast asks that once every (slightly more than a) year that you re-register for the updates so that they can have some idea how many folks are continuing to use the free product.

I suggest this very slight imposition compare favorably to the annual update tributes demanded by some other anti-virus products.

Thay’s when the current key expires. It may even expire a few days earlier depending if you used the 30 day trial.

and welcome to the forum

sorry alanrf, its not the notice…

but oldman, so with the thing i circled, thats just when the current key expires and then i have to re-register again for everything to be renewed?

Yep, you got it! ;D

ok, so just the final thing to clear up.

as long as i re-register my avast! every year, it will run and update forever as long its installed in my computer?

As long as Alwil (avast) is in business.

Maybe it would be smart to include auto-renew feature for Home Edition (like Norton does for payable version! or for example how AntiVir 7 updates it’s license via updater) because most of users don’t even know they have to renew it and they might just run it outdated which is a bad thing. They just expect it to work as it’s free. Professional Edition is somehow different as most of users know they have to renew it as it’s payable. Any comment on this one from ALWIL team? I think it would solve bunch of questions and problems related to free subscription. I know registering once every year is a minor job for such cool program but most of people are just not up to the task (unfortunatelly even to so simple one).

Pro users get a e-mail notification, so the “remembering” is done for you. ::slight_smile: But you still have to fill out a couple of pages.

AdobeR.exe

How i over come
Do awast is updated with three viruses

Your best bet for help is to start a new thread with your question. Your question has nothing to do with the subject of this one.

Welcome to the forum

It appears that the avast team want positive feedback that their free (as in you pay nothing for it) product continues to be used. This seems to me a remarkably trivial request of all of us freeloaders - that we confirm we are still using the product.

Auto-renewal completely overrides the ability of the avast team to know that we want to keep on getting this free service.

If you don’t like free … by all means pay to get reminders until the crack of doom.

What’s the hardship in cooperating to get free stuff???

Not to mention how many servers etc are needed to ensure no "standing in line’ for up dates.

Alanrf, like you, I too am baffled by the seemingly inconvience that some see. ???

The feedback that is received by your registering and re-registering gives avast a good idea of the number of active avast users there are and that helps them ensure that there are sufficient servers to do VPS and Program updates. This way you don’t suffer the update problems connecting to update servers associated with a number of other AVs and programs.

Recently avast clocked up its 20 millionth download of avast 4 home (offer of 20% discount on Pro version for a limited period http://www.avast.com/eng/promotion-discount-offer.html), now they aren’t all active so the registration process helps with planing.

As Alan said a small price to pay 1 minute (tops) of your time.
