Last time I was testing Kerio 4.2 it was before Sunbelt acquired it.
It was in theory nice, but BSOD’s.
I will give this a new try.
I installed the “advanced user option”, but it had “Any other application” allowing access to internet. I knew it, but a newcomer might be very puzzled why every app gets to internet outbound without asking.
So that installation option fault was fixed by giving ‘ask ask ask ask’ to that any other application rule
Then I imported my kerio 2.1.5 packet filter rules from this thread: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=22030.0.
They got there alright, but seemed they were not working. Finally I figured out that every rule belonged now for some reason to Trusted group. Everyone had to be manually changed to belong to the Default group. Then it worked. Very tedious job. Mouse hand syndrom danger with this operation, but only needed to do once
In the Network/Application tab I disabled all the programs to have internet access or trusted for that matter. I also disabled the Predefined tab since the main intent is to have all the working rules only coming from the packet filter rules.
Then I went to check if dynamic DHCP works for my cable modem connection. I went to my network card and changed it’s MAC address and then watched if I get a new IP. A popup from kpf came and I figured out that the 'DHCP Broadcast packet filter rule needed to be ticked. Then it worked. A little somehow puzzled why kerio 2.1.5 did not need it? Seems it maybe allows something implicit, not good. But no complaints to kpf 4 here.
I noticed that Alerts function is not working in Kerio 4 unlike it is working and very nice in kerio 2.1.5.
Shutting down the system is very slow cause of kerio 4 whereas kerio 2.1.5 did not take any time that i had noticed, minor inconvenience.
Now I wait to see if I get a BSOD or if missing fw alerts and stuff. Then if that happens, I go back to kerio 2.1.5.

I also unticked all in that Trusted area tab, again all that is needed is in the packet filter rules. No trusted area is desired since I have a single PC to internet, no LAN.
Enabled application behaviour blocking and disabled web content filtering.
I got a BSOD, so now I am back to kerio 2.1.5.
Was not expecting much, but had to try.
The interface of kerio 2.1.5 is so much cleaner, feels safer to mess with the rules. Plus you could not see the log window same time as the packet rule window.
Also Kerio 4 did not log as much with the same rules as kerio 2.1.5??? Very much doubt if it is the SPI. Made me not to trust it.
Also could not get alerted by those rules I had selected to do so.
Wish someday Kerio has all the features working, but it needs also a new clearer packet filter GUI, something like kerio 2.1.5 has. Someday never comes?
As a simple application rule filter program it might be nice already as it is now though .
I gave up on Sunbelt Kerio a while back. I like software that is in constant development like from Avast and Comodo. Not 6 months and couple of bug fixes plus new bugs and a name change like Sunbelt! What a joke.
When I went to read the program’s help file outside the GUI, from Start/programs etc. There was options for czech and english languages, but english language version was also propably czech, certainly not english.
English help file was there, though reached by GUI or taken a desktop shortcut.

But sloppiest mistake outside the bugs was that the so called advanced install was instead simple that I mentioned in my first post.
I got through the programs features and amazed that they did not still work.
It has a shiny GUI though Not very practical though.
Kerio is great but it needed a company like Awil (Avast) to develop it and add new features, whilst providing unrivalled support and genuine care for its users. ;D
well i’m using KPF w/o problems since they fixed in some 4.2x build that BSOD with Unreal engine games …
my rules are translating into each new build …
truth is i updated from last Kerio PF 4.2.2 to Sunbelt KPF 4.3.246 and then 4.3.248
with 246 i encoutered only problem with shutdown where error window was trigered but that’s fixed in 248 …
also since 246 i encoutered only one BSOD while running some 3D demo + audio minimized in kmixer.sys but unsure what was trigger most likely related to demo itself and creative drivers
