Forgive me if I am an idiot. I have not been able to access the internet since a browser hijack. Just ran avast and three .dll are in the chest in system files. What does this mean and what action should take? Could this be why I am unable to get online?
The system files are there for backup purposes. They’re not infected.
Can you go to the ‘Infected files’ folder and see any file there? If not, you’re clean…
Welcome to avast forums 8)
There is one infected file from 8/15/2003. Labeled backup-20050311-005435-600.dll Virus description Win32:VirCollect [Trj] File size 57344 I have no idea what this is. What should I do?
Files in Chest are safe. The virus won’t get out from there.
Anyway, your file seems to be very old. You can safe delete it…
Generally, 15-30 days are more than enough
In addition to kernel32.dll and wsock32.dll, I also have the file command.com in my system files chest. Is this file command.com there for backup purposes also? There is nothing in my infected files chest.
Most probably it’s a backup one.
Which is your operational system?
My OS is Windows98SE - does this make it ok for file command.com to be in my Avast system files chest?
Most probably. I asked for Igor’s help (the Windows 98 guru from Alwil).
You can extract the file to a floppy (do not run it, just extract) and test it here: Jotti and let us know the results.
Yes, command.com is also backed up on Windows 9x systems.
Thank you, Technical and igor for your assistance!
