There is a lot of debate whether KillIt.exe in the HP folder is a legitimate program to be on your PC. It was on mine and Avast brought it up as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). Recently i had to reinstall Windows 7 and now i find that KillIt.exe does not come pre-installed on my computer and of course the HP folder is not present. I had always wondered why this was there as i have a Sony Vaio with no HP printers, modems etc attached.
Several articles say that KillIt.exe is for shutting down non respnsive programs and if you delete it you will not be able to do this. But, I have no longer got KillIt.exe yet i can still shut down unresponsive programs via task manager.
I shall let you decide from this as to whether KillIt.exe is legitimately on your pc or not. I don’t know what it was doing on mine.
There really is little debate/decision to be made.
The only reason it is detected is because the user elects to scan for PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Program) and this would most certainly fall into that category.
What the user then has to decide is it unwanted, e.g. a) is it legit, b) did they install it, c) if not did it come with the system, d) what location is it in (helps with a and c), etc. etc.
Using your friend google on the file will give many examples of this file and importantly its location, most commonly in C:\HP\bin and if you have an HP system then the strong likelihood it is a legit part of the HP recovery process.
If you don’t like all this checking you have to do, then don’t go searching for PUPs in scans, you might be surprised by what is found and you have to know something about your system and what is on it.
Note I don’t have an HP system all my info is gathered from this forum and google, there is a wealth of information out there to help make your decision (or don’t go looking for PUPs).
