I guess I am in the right place reading other posts.
I have been using Avast AV and recently have had some real problems with slow performance etc. I was in the process of running some scans and cleaning up files using safe mode. Then today safe mode would not boot up at all. It would run the list and stop. None of the safe mode options would prevent this from happening.
If I boot in normal mode then I get as far as the Windows page and it hangs. The laptop is currently dead as no hard drive is heard.
I can get into BIOS but I don’t know if that is any use.
My wireless router has also stopped working but not sure if that is related. I cannot get the router (Netgear DG834Gv3) wireless light to light up but it works via Ethernet cable. The set up disc no longer configures my wireless for some reason.
I am guessing I have this serious virus issue but as I can’t boot the laptop what do I do to retrieve my files and attempt to clean it??
welcome to the forum.
what files have avast found and removed from your computer?
i suggest you download and burn a rescue disk from drweb cure it or avira from a clean computer. and then boot with that cd in your computer that could not boot. scan that computer with the reseue disk.

if you can boot that computer up in safe mode download and install malwarebytes antimalware and scan your computer with that.

good luck write back on your progress or if you need more help.
OK i ran the onboard self test (F5) which cleared all systems.
Looked at system tree diagnostic and ran “no boot of OS test”. It did not tick the SATA Disk S/N = MPBCPOXGK302LM - confidence test.
I the ran express test and it showed error code OFOO:131C Non receoverable hardware error.
I tried to reboot via CD with your rescue link but it would not read the CD.
I tried again with a flashdrive by making that #1 from boot and it just comes up “disk error press any key”
Any ideas??
you could try this http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html. download run a scan and post the result here so we can have a look.
could some system files have been deleted so because of that the computer wont boot? if so a repair or a re-installation of the os might work.
good luck.
If it cannot read the CD then in reality there is little that can be done, if it was a virus I could clean outside of windows by using a PE disc (USB drive) . But, if the CD is not detected along with the USB then a re-install/repair if you can get it to read the windows CD - Some laptops have a restore facility both destructive and repair does yours have that ? If you are not sure let me know the make and model and I will find out
As for your wireless router, the wireless light might not be lit if there are no wireless clients connected to it. So, that may not be a problem at all.
Or, you can always hit the reset button on the back of it for a few seconds, then set it up again using the CD that came with it, or by manually configuring it.
