Laptop won't boot, not even safe mode

Hmm OK not the problem I thought, what is the make and model and I will look for a hard drive diagnosis programme

It’s an acer 8930…I’ve rebooted again and this time it has stuck at the welcome screen after the password and before the desktop loads

So it is stopping a different points then ?

OK Seatools should work on your computer, there are full instructions here http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/201271en and here http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/SeaToolsDOSguide.pdf

I would recommend the short test

I have been following this problem, and really want to know what the solution is.

I have been researching the problem, and maybe one of these links will help solve it.

They are all very relevant for similar problems, but unfortunately the system worked for about 24 hours and then failed again. It may be the video card is going or the hard drive. Difficult to say at this stage

I hope it is not the hard drive.

Did you read the article that suggested a parallel installation? Have you ever done this?

Yes although I generally do that as a workaround on XP systems although there should be no problem using that on Vista and 7

Hi sorry for taking a while to get back…I had to put it aside for a few nights as I was getting completely frustrated with it. Last night I tried it again prior to doing the things you suggested in your last post. On the off chance I tried going back to the restore point it had made when it was working after your fix, and although it was incredibly slow it eventually booted back up. Not wanting to be too optimistic I shut it down and tried it again, and woohoo it worked. So I’m really not sure why that happened but it seems to be ok now
Thanks again so much for all your help xx

Did you update any programmes after the last fix that we ran ?

No none at all…I just shut it down as normal

Let me know how it runs for the next day or so… Glad it is back up and running

All still good ;D

OK lets file that one under weird
