Latest Upgrade to v.4.8

I am finding a log entry for a “new” program trying to update/upgrade Avast v.4.7. It was initially denied access/outbound to the Internet. The program filename is: [setup.ovr]. In the process of investigating this file here on this forum and observing some disfunctional windows hierarchal on “open”. the Avast program asked to update and it was allowed. Then it asked to reboot, but crashed on the shutdown and I had to power off/on. Is this a legitimate program of Avast for update or am I in a infected cycle of problems just starting that way? The Avast update/upgrade is warning that the procedure is not complete. Should allow all permissions and manually update again to be safe and sure? ???

Hi cubie

Under normal circumstances, ‘setup.ovr’ (like ‘avast.setup’) is a legitimate temporary file created as part of the avast! update process and should be allowed access. It may be worth doing a manual update just to clear up any mess caused by the previous interrupted update.

Yes, setup.ovr is transformed into avast.setup which is the one that asks for connection to update.

Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.

Don’t need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service). Although, ashServ.exe sends ping packets to find out if the Internet connection is alive. You can turn this off by checking the “My computer is permanently connected to the Internet” box in the avast Program Settings > Update (Connections) page.

OK,
I did a manual upgrade/update and Avast says everything was ok. :-\

I also gave these programs permissions in the FW.

Unfortunately, this hierarchal tree in “open” of subfolders is still not working. This is the explorer navigation bar and in the parent window to the sub file/folder. This problem just started today with this update/upgrade to v.4.8 from v.4.7. :-[

I will run a cleanboot and some maintenance programs and check back tommorrow. ::slight_smile:

After the cleanboot, the system seems to be working ok.

I am still watching, so no news is good news.

Glad everything seems to be all right
