So I was freaking out thinking the WIFI adapter had broken on my laptop. But I checked the Internet settings and I wasn’t connected, even though I had a WIFI connection. My phone was connected to the Internet, suggesting it was a problem on the laptop, but I reset my computer, the modem and used a USB WIFi adapter to eliminate all possible things that could be causing the issue (following the golden rule of troubleshooting: only make one change at a time and check the results). Still no go. So I turned off Avast protection, then turned the Firewall back on followed by the other shield in the protection (can’t remember what it’s called). That resolved the problem.
I’m using the latest update: ver 12:40 (build 25.9.10453.0).
I notice someone reported a similar issue last year (not allowed to post links, but it’s the post previous to this one).
There seems to be several recent reports of Avast blocking internet access here on the forum.
This post may help others work round the problem, so if you can remember which shield was switched after the firewall, or if you find out by repeating (if you unfortunately loose internet again), please post again.
