Lost all Browser connectivity

:frowning:

Have Avast on main box and runs fine so when McAffee expired went and downloaded it on my Laptop WinXP Pro SP3

Installed fine.

Have two icons on task bar that says I have both network and internet connection

but when I use any browser ( firefox or IE) or the program tries to update I get can’t find or connection was interupted or no connection.

I have gone to firewall and made sure all are in exception list.

Have done manual proxy localhost 12080

rebooted

still no connection

out of ideas

HELP!! ???

You shouldn’t have to set the browser to use the web shield manually as it is transparent in winXP.

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashWebSv.exe internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and reconnect to the internet, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

Hi

OK went back and removed the localhost from both IE and Mozilla.

No change.

Went to control panel/firewall and that entry is not there

Still get

Connection interupted The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading the network link was interupted while negotiating a connection please try again in Mozilla

In IE get page cannot be displayed with an insert window to attempt fixing network connectivity problems click tools and the click “diagnose Connection Problems”

Ran that

Get Windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP HTTPS or FTP This is probably caused by firewall settings

Check the firewall setting for the HTTP port (80) HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21)

Where are these to check ?

Well you haven’t said what the firewall is ?

The avast web shield, if blocked by the firewall, should still allow access to https and ftp as avast doesn’t monitor that activity, only port 80 http protocol. So as you are finding there may be more to this than just avast.

That may well be remnants of McAfee you don’t say which version so here are some links to look at for removal tools - McAfee has an uninstall tool that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed.

Is the standard Windows Firewall

Think is Mcaffee Problem is without being able to go online can’t download tools

I have McAffee System Works and it has an AV folder with 119 files in it

Think is McAffee but getting it fixed may be a problem

Presumably you could download the tools on whatever you are using to connect now, save them to CD or USB and transfer them later.

If you have the McAfee Internet Security Suite or whatever they call it (Works, etc.) then you could probably uninstall it and do a custom install excluding the AV element.

figured that out while waiting. Burned the clean up program to a CD and ran on laptop.

Had to Add/remove works on CP first then ran program.

Cleaned it totally.

And lo and behold there is the browser and internet connection is there.

HATE MCAFFEE AND NORTONS

Thanks for the links

ashwebsv.exe must be allowed to connect into the firewall settings.
avast and McAfee antivirus will conflict. Uninstall McAfee and use their specialized tool to remove remains.

Oops… David was faster

No problem, glad I could help and that you have everything working as it should.
