Sorry for the dumb question guys but late last night I was reading the forum deciding that I should get rid of AVG and load Avast and while looking at one thread there were links given to a guy that was complaining about the update taking hours on his system (I was getting concerned) so I followed the links that had been posted to check his applications for being current/outdated.
When the scan ran it found a few (Adobe to start) and I started the update at the same time. The install/update closed the browser window and I lost the thread I had been reading.
I have tried searching the forums but have not been able to find the same thread. I have looked al over to not avail…
Does anyone know what I am refering to? It was quite a long thread back and forth as the guy was infected. I’d like to run that test again as it showed other apps I needed to update.
Any help greatly appreciated. AVG is gone (never did find one virus) I’m now running Avast and ZoneAlarm on Vista Ultimate.
I got rid of the PC tools firewall to since it failed the leaktest. Running a scan now…
I don’t know the post you’re referring to, but is the link this one? http://secunia.com/ This is a pretty good site for checking the status of a lot of applications. I also downloaded and installed the “PSI” application. (Located about a third the way down the left column.) I think it’s well worthwhile. It fits with the description of what you’re asking, I think.
If it’s not that one, check your browser history.
[Edit] By the way, if you elect to install Avast, I doubt you’ll be disappointed. Been a long time since I’ve used AVG (or anything else, either.) Never needed a reason to change. Some think the interface is a bit “quirky”, once you get used to using it, it’s very configurable, easily.
Well after looking for quite a while (not here) I finally found a link to the test program I mentioned
This forum has a link to an article but not the program that I could find anyway.
It’s called Software Inspector from Secunia. (more details below)
By the way, filehippo, a similar program doesn’t seem to work correctly on Vista.
"The Secunia PSI protects against software vulnerabilities
364,801 users have already installed the Secunia PSI and 30,337,348 user applications are currently monitored.
The Secunia PSI is the FREE security tool that is designed with the sole purpose of helping you secure your computer from software vulnerabilities. Software vulnerabilities affect all applications installed on your computer, from the Operating System down to your email client, office application, instant messaging, and so on."
Since the search on this forum never showed it up with logical terms, I’ll add a few so MAYBE if someone else is looking they will find it.
It is a useful tool - except for adobe’s update closing the browser window I would have been done HOURS ago.
Application updates
Program updates
Test Applications
Test my program versions
software inspector
Yep, Thanks for your answer. I also updated the post I had read for clarity.
My browser setting flushes the cache each time it closes so no luck there. I guess that’s what I get for surfing after 2:00am.
I did install Avast and Zonealarm and after the leak test failed I realized it is probably getting the router I connect to. I piggyback on a nice neighbor.
All his ports show either stealthed or closed.
Kind of frustrating - all the tests I tried detect what they think your IP is and don’t let you change it. Any ideas how I can check MY PC’s vulneabilities? I’d like to know I am protected…
For anyone wanting to get THEIR OWN IP on Vista do this:
1.) From Control Panel open Network and Sharing Center.
2.) Under Connection, click View status.
3.) Click Details. Your computer’s IP address appears in the Value column, next to “IPV4 IP Address.”
This is actually a different question but related - The software inspector shows I have several version of Sun Java (including the latest) Does anyone know if the older versions can be removed or are they incemental?
Sun Java JRE 1.6.x / 6.x 6.0.20.6
Sun Java JRE 1.6.x / 6.x 6.0.50.13 > latest
Sun Java JRE 1.6.x / 6.x 6.0.30.5
Man you think they would just update the current install and only leave you with one version. People should not have to be rocket scientists to use their PC’s! This can be entertaining but it takes up way too much of my time. I want a “toaster” like appliance, press the button and it just works.
Yeah, people should not have to be rocket scientists.
I was quite surprised myself to find that the Java updates don’t take care of what was installed prior.
You have to remove the old versions. It can be done through add/remove programs. It is generally better to do this prior to installing the new. Saves confusion. But I think it’s probably OK to do it now. Just remove all but the current version.
You may want to disable the Java updater from startup, too. It’s never done anything worth squat, for me. I disable it via msconfig, and rely on the Secunia application for update info.
I have no idea how to check for your connection security with a wireless/piggyback arrangement, sorry. But reading what you’ve written about it doesn’t cause any alarm bells to go off, here.
