Avast mail shield bug
Macbook-El Capitan-Apple Mail App-cloud email account
Mail shield caused mail app to get stuck downloading new messages which occasionally resulted in the app crashing and new mail to not come into the inbox.
Un-enabling Mail Shield corrected the issue.
