MACRO VIRUS on XPSP3- IE won't browse, Word 2002 wont save, Search not working!

I am using the lastes version of Avast Antivirus and last week on Friday my system stopped working right. Word 2002 gives “changes to the global dot” have been made do you wish to save? and will not save any document opened. Microsoft Search is not working and will not even open up. IE8 is blank and will not show anything when I try to browse with it, also clicking on Help and Version will not display.

I thought maybe Comodo Dragon, the Chromium (like Google Chrome but without the advertizing and supposedly more secure) had somehow engaged it’s secure servers, so i uninstalled it but I still can’t web browse and the system is still all screwed up! I have scanned with Malwarebytes Antimaleware, Avast Antivirus 5.0 (recently updated to 6.0) and Spyware Terminator. Nothing shows up in the scans. Also I get a memory error when I try to run Spyware Terminator that I never got before “Invalid floating point operation” and also a memory error on Spyware Blaster (By Javacool software which immunizes IE and Firefox rom bad web sites) which will not even load up with this error: “Error: Access violation at 0x73483F5A (tried to read from 0x00000014), program terminated.”

I understand the “changes to the global dot” error I get when I close Word 2002 can indicate a macrovirus. Why didn’t Avast catch that? I can’t complain too bad, this is the first breach in my security in 6 years, the last time was worm in 2005 that blasted right through Norton’s Antivirus, which is when I switched to Avast for a faster antivirus program which takes very few system resources.

Thanks for any help you can give me, John  I have 1GB Ram, 120GB hard drive with 23 GB free, and an HP 774e Pavillion with an AMD Athlon 2600+ processor. Yah, it is old (2003) but it still can play Warhammer 40,000 Soul Storm! (128MB Nvida 5200 card) Most games after 2008 require 256MB video Ram, so I am looking to upgrade when I can afford it. Oh, and I use Netzero DIALUP, so no big downloading suggestions for me, ok? I will have to go get that at my friends house to get any large downloads as he has high speed internet, another thing I cannot afford now since I am unemployed.

Thanks Polonus! I will check that out!

I tried to uninstall and re-install IE8 but that did not do anything either! ;-( For some strage reason Windows update tries to run in the background but you cannot access Windows Update from the startmenu or from IE8, or even IE7 since I uninstalled 8 again. I think I will back up my system and re-install XP as it is time, been over 3 years since I did that.

Thanks again! Anyone else get hit recently with a Macro Virus with those symptoms (IE8 blank page, Search not working, Word not saving with Global Dot error) recently or in the last year? John Trek
