I am using Nortons Internet security and when I set the Personal firewall to Medium I cannot get my mail and I get the following message. “Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: ‘pop.ozemail.com.au’, Server: ‘pop.ozemail.com.au’, Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F”
I can get the mail if I reduce the security level to low.
Any suggestions why?
By the same problem what do you mean, you too have NIS and you are changing your firewall settings and that stops it working. If not you don’t have the same problem.
It is quite possible that a firewall can stop ashMaiSv.exe (avasts Internet Mail provider), stop ashMaiSv.exe and no mail. Usually it either works or doesn’t, this inconsistancy points towards another source.
When you say it doesn’t work! what errors/warnings/messages are you getting?
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: ‘mail.ntelos.net’, Server: ‘mail.ntelos.net’, Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F
this is the error message
and i did not change a thing-one day mail ok next day the message
I’m having the same problem with the intermittent Server timeout messages. I just installed Avast and am running WinXP and Outlook Express with a Cable modem. Everything seems to be working ok except when I try to SEND mail. Today I got a Virus Warning message on an attached File I was sending. I immediately went to the directory where the file was and did a scan - It came up clean. I had my timeout set to 1 minute and have since advanced it to 2.5 mins, which is a millennium in computereze. What is Avast doing that would cause these timeouts and false virus warnings to occur???
If you disable the smtp (outbound mail) scanning, will it help?
Are you sure the message is not from the Heuristic module of Internet Mail provider? I mean, something related to the email itself: the subject, number os persons you’re sending it, etc.?
I hate to say it, but that isn’t fixing a problem, rather avoiding it rather than trying to fix it.
Even at this point you haven’t even told us what email program you have got or if you even tried the time out delay option or any of the other suggestions or if this happened for all email or that with attachments. In short we know little of your problem so it is difficult to help.
I hate to say it but you’re the person with a problem and as David said never offered any one here an opportunity to help you
fix it. Let’s hope you didn’t cause yourself another problem thru your rash move.
Hopefully the forum of your new AV program can be of more help to you than were.
Sorry to see you go but that’s your choice and your right.

Ok, as you can see, i’m not an experienced user but I’m interested because (as you say rightly) many users have some problems… and me the same. But my problem was solved after reinstallation of SP 2. I run WinXP Pro and my original version (on cd-rom) was SP1.
Well, after SP2, many programs ran badly so I decided to reinstall all SP2… MAGIC!!!.. all problems disappears. Have you troubles also with other software or only with Avast!
Ok. Unfortunately I’m have not the skills to help you with wise suggestions… I can only hypotize and I understand how you want have no problems.
I’m very happy for your attention and I hope to see you lagain on this forum… maybe some evangelist find a solution for you.
Bye=Ciao.
