Mail Scanner Warning

I have just installed avast Home and have received the warning msg 'unable to protect outgoing mail (SMTP protocol) Error 10048

Port 25 is already in use…’

  1. How do I find out what other app is using Port 25 to free it up for avast SMTP?
  2. The error msg refers to 'Manual Setting of Mail Protection in help… Where do I access Help?

What OS?
Do you have a mail filter/spam killer installed?

OS is win2k.
OK This was weird. (Thanks for the suggestion.) I have Zone Alarm which had Outbound MailSafe Protection turned ON. I turned it off, rebooted and no warning message. Just to satisfy myself that that was indeed the culprit, I turned it back on and rebooted expecting to see the warning msg again. NO warning msg! Go figure! So I guess I’m happy now… but still pondering what happened.

The error message you were receiving was from ZA, not Avast.
The Outbound Protection of ZA sometimes generates this error message.
As you found out, rebooting fixes things.
Should it reoccur, then we need to figure out why.
