Avast Free 5 has the Mail Shield off and it won’t let me turn in it back on. I tried e-mailing the support to ask them about it and never received a reply. How can I get this to turn back on? I tried clicking start and it doesn’t do anything.
OS? What other security software are you using? What was your previous AV and how did you remove it. One thing to try is to go to add/remove programs and select “fix” for avast!
My OS is Windows 7 Pro. I have Ad-Aware and Windows Defender. I previously used Avast Free 4.8.
Have you rebooted since the problem occurred ?
If so - - Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
Yes I have rebooted since this problem has occurred and it still did not fix the problem nor did repairing Avast in Add/Remove Programs.
So this system never came pre-installed with another AV ?
Did you install 5.0 over 4.8 ?
It may be best to do a clean install:
Download the latest avast version 5.0.418, if you haven’t saved your previous download or if it isn’t the latest version.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here, aswClear5.exe (this version has multiple version uninstall tools) and save it to your HDD.

- Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode (first for avast 4.8 and then for 5.0), once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
