Hey,
I’m using the mail-app from win 8.1 with a gmail-account and the mail shield is not doing anything, i.e. it’s not scanning any mails, although it’s set to scan all (incoming, outgoing and newsgroup) messages. I have no clue.

mail shiled only work if you have installed a mail client like outlook express / thunderbird or similar
not sure if that mail app is in that category…
if not your mail will be scanned like normal web traffic by the webshield, same as using webmail
Gmail have there own scanners on the mail server. They protect all accounts with postini spam/virus filter using two AV engines from Authentium and McAfee
As Pondus pointed out, you might take a look at what is scanned by the “Web Shield” when you send/receive using your email client program (mail-app). The only emails I get scanned by the Avast “Mail Shield” are my emails present in my Outlook email client program, all others I can observe are being scanned by the “Web Shield” (just as Pondus pointed out, I just thought I’d mention this as well because you can prove this to yourself by monitoring the “Web Shield”).
