Main Program won't open

thanks for trying:)

After you try to start one of the scanners (ashSimpl2.exe, for example), does it appear in the list of running processes (in Process Explorer)?
Is there anything in avast! log? (rightclick on avast! tray icon, select avast! Log Viewer and check everything above the Error cathegory, including).

Can you scan a folder using the Explorer Extension? (rightclick, “Scan …”).

yes they stay in the memory (list of running processes / process explorer)

actually i can’t open the log viewer either…

Can’t you run it directly from avast! folder?
ashLogV.exe

no

S***
If you boot in Safe Mode, could you run avast! executables?
ashsimpl.exe etc. etc.

At the risk of frustrating you… nope

In fact, I’m not frustrated… I’m surprised… I never saw this behavior before.
It’s intrigating me. The worst thing is that the processes are listed there and nothing is running…
Something is avoiding it to load. I’ve got this with Firefox some months ago and it was due to the Extensions.
Do you use ProcessGuard?

Well, that’s really strange. I believe I’ve heard of a similar conflict with WindowBlinds, or IconPackager, but your list of processes doesn’t suggest anything like that.

The only thing I can tell you to try is to kill the (non-Microsoft) processes one by one and check if it makes any change for avast! each time. Don’t forget to kill the frozen avast! process before every try…

ProcessGuard? what’s that?

and actually, i AM using iconpackager… it wasn’t in active processes because it doesn’t have to be in the memory to work, i guess it just changes something and then is done?

can you tell me more about the conflict with iconpackager, igor?

Not really, I’m afraid - one user wrote me that he had a similar problem, and finally found out that it was caused by IconPackager. On the other hand, he also wrote that an updated version (3.00b.093 at that time) should be available, fixing the problem.

hm… very interesting. I don’t see a 3.00b version, the latest i see is 3.00a. I will try uninstalling it, but i doubt it will make any difference since the program does not need to be run for the effects to be maintained.

I can confirm IconPackager stops Avast! from working in the manner you have described. I formatted my HDD (needed to anyway) and didnt re-install the offending products. No problems now

Thanks for posting…
Anyway, a friend of mine have both avast! and IconPackager working togheter… Maybe a 3rd software is involved too ::slight_smile:

Windowblinds or WindowFX maybe? I had both of those too…

I have IconPackager Installed (3.0a… latest version on their site). but it’s never in the memory unless i’m changing settings.
I HAD windowfx, just to play with it, but i uninstalled it already =/

Ok, IconPackager is not in memory but it changes settings and how programs are displayed.
Can you bakcup your icon packagers (collections), uninstall the application, boot and try to use avast?

i’ll do that when i get home. but i’m actually curious now if anyone knows what exactly IP changes?

Confirmed: it has to do with iconpackager… unfortunately i can’t get the updated beta yet =p. i wonder what exactly it has to do with though. If i uninstall IP, reboot, i can run the main program and everything, even if i reinstall it and enable it (until my next reboot)
