Major issues with Web Shield

By major issues, I mean I’ve had to remove the web shield component to get many customers able to browse HTTPS sites again. Many of these sites are for business purposes. This happens in both Avast Free and Avast Business Free.

There’s nothing about the browser not being able to connect to the website. It’s just a white screen. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome all do it. As soon as I remove the web shield and reboot it works fine.

I don’t get it. It’s been happening for well over a month at random times to random customers on varying versions. It’s infuriating to my customers because they’re unable to work or play, and it drives me nuts because I recommended Avast to them to begin with. There have been between 30-40 computers I know about that have this issue in the past month. Not including the ones I haven’t personally dealt with. I don’t know what’s happening. Is there a log file I can grab and upload the next time it happens for someone here to look at?

If your customers do not have the latest version go here: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=199715.0

Release/changelog is extensive worth reading. Firewall rules mainly changed due to Vista issues.

These are the in regards to both free versions of Avast, there is no firewall included in those.

Regardless if the program or definitions have been updated or not(I’ve tried running updates and restarting on all the machines I see this on), it seems to be the same issue and I’m assuming it’s with HTTPS scanning. However, just disabling the web shield doesn’t fix the issue, it has to be removed from the application using Programs and Features. It’s just the web shield and that module alone that interferes with general use of the internet.

I have the exact same issue. It happens on windows 10 machine, although with windows 8.1 it works fine, no problem.

EDIT: with chrome, I get this error: ERR_SSL_BAD_RECORD_MAC_ALERT. Similar error happens on firefox and edge.

Please make sure Windows Defender is off.

The link mchain provided did contain download links for all versions of avast (free or paid products).

I checked and doublechecked and windows defender is off. But thanks for your suggestion anyway.

Update: it looks to me that this problem may be present on windows 10 Home only. On my friend’s PC that has windows 10 pro it works with no problems

What happens when you disable HTTPS scanning in the web shield?

It’s the same, if not worse.
