Manual start instead of at boot up?

I have avast! installed on my new netbook.

It seems that if I have no wireless signal, the computer hangs and won’t start - I get as far as the desktop with a “waiting” cursor and in the sys tray, the avast! had a little red “not” circle on it.
I think it’s hanging the boot.

How do I set up avast! so I can turn it on manually when I have a signal?

Which is your other antivirus? Or the one before avast?
Any other security program that could interfere?
Do you use Vista? XP?

No other anti virus.
Why would I need another AV?

It’s an XP netbook.

I think I’ve solved the problem by turning off automatic updates - I switched to manual.

I hope this is the thing that does it. I have no wireless signal at home and like to use it for other stuff!

It shouldn’t hang… so I’ve asked for a second antivirus as a possible conflict.
Also the update method shouldn’t be the problem.
You can set the use of a dial-up into avast update settings and you can also delay the update of avast into a permanent internet connection (DSL) you can change the value AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds into avast4.ini file. Details on ‘Settings’ in my signature.

Thanks for the link to the ini file and the tip.

I have to see if leaving it on manual updates works. I haven’t turned the computer on enough times to see if it’s the fix.

You posted that you don’t avast! is hanging the book, but every time this has happened, the avast! icon in the system tray has the little red “not” symbol on it.

[At least I think it’s a “not” symbol. The netbook display is already so small, and the icon is correspondingly small, so whatever red symbol that is is tiny!]

Will “AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds” take a value of over 60 if I decide to try that?

Interesting that the [program setting choices are only ‘dial up’ and ‘always connected.’ Neither of those describes my connection!

Wireless needs “AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds” to slow down request for connection.

Technically Wireless is ‘always connected’ unless the system is away from an access point.

Setting the Netbook to Manual update seems like the best solution then update when you do have an Internet connection.

For dial-up you need to use:
UseRAS=1
RASWaitSeconds=15

What are the different Internet connection methods?

Note If you want to connect a wireless network to the Internet with a broadband modem, choose the Wireless option.

Wireless is not dial-up.

We all know that, but avast could detect an intermittent wireless as a dial-up.
I won’t make that much difference. The user could let both options unchecked.
