Manual Update Error

I did a fresh install and then launched the manual update file I downloaded. This created an error that said the manual update failed. To get up to date, I had to connect to the internet and let Avast update the usual way. I guess the manual update needs to be fixed.

Why are you running the full virus definitions update ?
What is wrong with using the normal incremental auto update ?

I have used the Manual update of VPS a few times in the last couple of days and no problem - avast! Virus Definitions Update - Manual Download VPS Update (virus definitions, vpsupd.exe, approx 67.5 MB). - Save the file to your hard disk, locate where you saved it and double click it and that should carry out the virus definitions update.

I wanted to do a clean reinstall. After this, all the updates need to be brought up to date. Using the full manual update saves a lot of time. I definitely had problems with this full update.

Well the virus definitions shouldn’t be that far out of date if you download avast from a source that keeps the installation file updated with the latest signatures. There will always be a bit of a gap, but an incremental update has got to be quicker than downloading the full database at 67.5MB.

I use to use the incremental update installer which got larger in size over time. I can’t find this anymore. The link you posted is 89.3 MB which is the same size of the original release installer.

The link I posted is the avast installation file as the name suggests.

The link in my first reply is for the full virus definitions definitions download, it isn’t an incremental update but the full database. Incremental updates are only available through the avast program UI, either on the auto virus definition updates or by selecting a manual update. Both of these check the current version against what the latest version is on the update servers and only download the virus definition updates that you don’t have.

Why is auto update not working?

I haven’t the slightest idea as you don’t give any information and it is working for me.

Please stop posting in other peoples topics when it isn’t directly related (which it isn’t), that is considered hijacking.

There use to be a time when I could go to the Avast website and download an Avast free installer which included more current virus definition updates. The size of this installer would get larger as time passed. After installing this and connecting to the internet, I would receive just a few updates that made Avast current.

The original installer for the current version when installed shows virus definition dated sometime in August 2012. So there’s about two months of virus definitions that will be updated through internet after install.

So I’m thinking that perhaps Avast stopped releasing the installers that contained more current virus definitions.

Avast does periodically update the installation file and that would include the latest virus definitions (VPS). Even if that was a month old it would be less than downloading the full VPS, which as I said are currently 67.5MB.

Some other download sources may not update them so frequently, that is why I asked about source.

Even if the last program update 7.0.1466 hadn’t been updated with the latest VPS since its release, 2012-08-21, it would still be best to use the incremental update from within the avastUI. Should the difference be so great between the two versions, installed and available, the program I believe would recommend downloading the full VPS.
