Manually updating virus database

How do I manually update the virus database in Avast 4.7 Home edition?

the program has repeatedly told me that the connection was interrupted during automatic updating so I spent several hours over several days downloading the virus database, but can’t find any way from within the program to update the database from the downloaded file.

Thank you in anticipation of your help.

This is how I do it.

Right CK on A-ball.

Left CK on Settings.

Left CK on Update [Basic].

At Virus Database CK Manual CK OK

Right CK A ball

Move Pointer to Updating

Left CK on Avs Update.

After Update is done Left CK on Summary Close

You can also update the program, 4.8.1229 is the latest version.

Unless I have overlooked something, the above messages highlight exactly the problem I am experiencing:
there is no option to install the update manually.
When I try to update online, even if I stay online for hours ignoring the protests of family, I eventually get a message saying that the update was unsuccessful.

This is getting very frustrating! >:(

You can download the full virus database “installer” here:

Well, generally few seconds (or even 1-2 minutes) are enough…
Are you trying to download the full virus database from here (http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/vpsupd.exe) or using the icon on system tray trying to update it incrementally?
I think the problem is due to the version you’re using… download the full 4.8.1229 avast setup file.

Thank you for your help, everybody.
Because I rely on a dialup connection, I had really hoped there would be a less time-consuming solution to this problem, but I am happy to report that downloading the latest complete installation package has fixed the problem.
The virus database has already been updated tonight and everything is looking good.
Once again, thank you for your patience, advice, and help.

Glad to know everything is fine now.

You’re welcome. Feel free to come back any time you need help or just to change experiences 8)

Quick question: I want to install newest version of Avast - do I have ot uninstall previous version first? This information is not clear anywhere I have looked. ??? Thanks

No, basically not - the easiest way to get the most actual version would be a program update…
but I’m not sure what happens if you again use the installation file…

To update the program itself, you can either invoke a Program update from the menus (if you’re online), or you can download the (latest) full installer from our web and start it - when it detects an existing installation on the computer, it offers you to update it.

In both cases, with avast 4 you don’t have to uninstall the previous version.

I need to find where the virus database is stored so I can transfer it from my computer and save time updating one i am setting up.
