The PC I was working must have been severely infected with viruses etc. Upon completing the bootscan check the system dumped all files (photos, music, settings etc) and reset itself to how it was set up when it came out of the box originally.
I should mention that I was accessing this computer remotely, navigated to 'Control Panel>User Accounts>Change the way users log on and off>deselected ‘use welcome screen’ and ‘fast user switching’, and ‘removed password’ from the account.
Upon restarting it the previous administrator account that was set up (HappyCamper) was no longer there. What can I do to get this data back?

This is not caused by a bootscan or avast.
avast does NOT reset a system to factury install.
In fact, it is not even capable of doing so.
Only something like GoBack, a eeprom or something like that can do it.
As wel as a recovery/restore cd ofcourse.
How to get data back?
Easy, use your latest backup.
Have none?
ouch, now you know why they created backup options.
You can ofcourse hire a company like Ontrack to get the data back.
But that will cost many dollars!
Did you set an automatic action for the boot-time scan (what it should do if an infected file is found)?
If not (which is the default), avast! didn’t find/do anything since it would ask you for the requested action otherwise…
