MAX++ x64 problems.

Hello all,

Although a lot has been discussed on here and elsewhere about this nasty piece of work, I have reached a point where I am in need of some assistance.

The bullet points:

  • I run Windows Vista 64 SP2.
  • Avast identifies two malware processes concerning csrss.exe: C:\Windows\assembly\tmp\U\800000cb.@ and C:\Windows\assembly\tmp\U\800000cf.@. After putting them in quarantine, Avast asks me to do a start-up scan, which yields no results, obviously, but then Windows boots, and I am back at square one.
  • The infamous consrv.dll file is in my System32 folder. I cannot change the registry for csrss.exe (where consrv has replaced winsrv) since it immediately reverts to consrv, whether I remove the dll file first or not.
  • While doing this, with the obvious BSOD as a result, I found that the system was already infected when the restore point was made. YAY.
  • Google search redirects, including redirects to coolsearchserver.com, up to a hilarious pop-up saying ‘URL does not exist!’ (or something to that extent), all while searching for topics related to the topic at hand (ie this particular piece of malware). I’m on Firefox 7.0.

I attached the appropriate logs. Hope it helps.

can you upload these file(s) to www.virustotal.com and test with 44 malware scanners when you have the result, copy the url in the address bar and post it here for us to see

It just so happens that I have fixed something similar, I thought it was zero access initially as the indicators are the same - but there is a tool to remove it and reset the registry

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop *

IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

@ Pondus

I tried uploading to Virus Total first, but apparently, that route was already taken care of by this rootkit. Both consrv and csrss were hidden (sic!) when using the standard Windows Explorer prompt, and simply typing the addresses did not work either.

ComboFix however seemed to have done the trick. I included the log, but the short version is that consrv.dll was successfully deleted, along with a ‘System64’ map that was apparently a fake directory; it looked like a shortcut, I never thought it was part of the problem.

I let Avast do a quick scan of Windows’ System32 map after ComboFix did its job (it found the original malware in the first place); nothing was found. Needless to say, all Google redirect nonsense is over, and Windows Firewall (forgot to add in the OP) is back up and running; it would automatically disable with no possibility to turn it back on.

This is an indicator of the zero access bootkit and also the conserv.dll malware the two are difficult to tell apart as the symptoms and logs appear the same

Any further problems

No, all is still normal like stated above, no Google redirects, Windows Firewall works again, Avast does not pick up any csrss abnormalities.

Thank you very much for your time and help!

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Remove ComboFix

[*]Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
[*]In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall (Notice the space between the “x” and “/”) then click OK
