So yesterday my laptop died on my. Multiple times. It just kinda… made a “pfft” sound and shut down. I dismissed it as overheating, which still makes sense to me (the heatsink was really clogged and the computer turned back on just fine once I let it sit for a while). As a precaution though, I ran a Symantec scan. Caught a tracking cookie, which I would also like to find out more about because my girlfriend keeps getting it too and despite it being marked as deleted, it always shows back up. But that’s a minor concern right now. I booted my comp back into Windows 7 (I have my HD partitioned into Vista and 7) and it said that I should consider replacing my battery. This was a MAJOR concern because my girlfriend’s computer started telling her that one day and it turned out to be some awful virus that, when she ran an Avira scan, was successfully removed. Her computer stopped shutting down randomly and stopped warning her about her battery.
Now, I don’t have Avira, it’s her father’s so there’s little chance of my getting it. I do, however, have Symantec and SuperANTISpyware. I was hoping SAS might be able to catch something since my comp is now doing exactly what hers used to, but now I’m really worried because SAS can’t do a full scan. It’ll make it as far as some of the Symantec files and then stop working. So now I ask… any suggestions on what I might have, whether or not I should worry, and what I should do about it if it is, indeed, a virus?
Sorry, to say that but the motherboard may either be covered in dust, have a nest of ants (shouldn’t be leaving food around), covered with pet hair, etc.
Symantec is a resource hog. Suggest your girlfriend’s father getting Avast.
I, too, have something on my computer. It says I have Java Script\favicon [1].htm."file. I can find it, but when I try to put in the virus chest, it says unable due to being used??? I’ve run virus cleaner and it says there is nothing there. But it also says it scanned the C drive. If it’s in internet temporary files, shouldn’t it scan that area? How do I get it scan it so I can kill it? HELP!
I did clean the heatsink, thus the use of past-tense (was) lol. As for Symantec, I get it free through school, which pays for it, so I’m getting a pay-quality antivirus for nada. I can also live with the fact that it’s a resource hog, because I keep it on Vista whereas I do most my gaming and whatnot (things more intensive than browsing simple internet sites) on 7. I’ll try running the malwarebytes scan and post what it comes back with.
And Jtaylor, her dad uses Avira, not Symantec. My girlfriend and I both get Symantec free through school is all. His Avira scan worked incredibly well.
This really should be in its own topic so as not to confuse/hijack the original posters topic.
Hopefully I will deal with this in the one reply, if you need further help you will need to start your own topic.
If you have XP, vista or Win2k (all 32bit), you could enable a boot time scan. Right click the avast icon, select Start avast! Antivirus, a memory scan will take place followed by the opening of the Simple User Interface, Menu, ‘Schedule boot-time scan…’ Or see http://www.digitalred.com/avast-boot-time.php. Don’t opt for deletion (you have no options left), always send to the chest and investigate.
I have Vista 32-bit and Windows 7 64-bit. I just ran the MalwareBytes scan and actually managed to catch something, I believe it was a browser hijacker or something incredibly similar. I figure this could explain the battery warning, but I’m unsure if it would explain the random shut-downs, though I suppose that could have just been overheating after all… But as of right now there haven’t been any sudden shutdowns all day, I haven’t been warned since this morning before I started scanning, and I’ve cleaned my comp up a bit so the heatsink isn’t so clogged (AND I’m getting a cooling pad today too), so I think I’m good at this point. Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I’ll be back if the virus is lol
