missing dll-files

Avast updated, after which it asked for a reboot. After having rebooted per Avast’s request, Avast wouldn’t restart, and the following dll-files were reported missing:

MSVCR71.dll
MSVCP71.dll

Any ideas?

try a repair of Avast.

start > control panel > add/remove programs > Avast > change/repair

Thanks for the tip, didn’t work though. I uninstalled the whole thing and then reinstalled it. Now there’s another problem. When I try to do a virus scan on the hard drive, it says something to this effect:

Unknown error 183: can’t create a file that already exists.

Sorry Per, no help but same problem. Avast.setup can’t find msvcr71.dll. Setup.eng downloaded ten times at least but no difference… Restarted. Uninstalled. aso…

Anyone??

I had the same problem, but only msvcr71.dll was missing. Try repairing Avast, which worked for me.

Oh,now I see that Eddy already suggested this. It worked for me.

The files that you all seem to be missing are dynamic link library files normally provided by Windows which are used by Avast.

Sometimes corruption results in the errors you are receiving, and sometimes a bad update causes the files to corrupt or become damaged.

If you download the files, don’t forget to register them using Regsvr32 function.

nenne123, why do you think it was avast.setup who needed the file but couldn’t find it?

And I don’t think it’s the setup that can’t find the file. I was getting a missing msvcr71.dll message when booting. Again, after repairing avast, all is well. FWIW, I did see msvcr71 flash by in the files list when avast was repairing itself.

Concerning dll-files.com, the zip I downloaded from them containing msvcr71 could not be opened by my zip app and their site recommens purchasing a zip app for $20us or so. No thanks, guys.

W2000+latest securitypack
The message appeared during installation. At first I was doing an upgrade to 4.5 that ended in failure. Rebooted and clicked a fresh download of 4.5, same message and repeated itself ten times till I deleted the dll.
Problems now solved. Dlls got corrupted. Running 4.5.523

  1. Please send the file \setup\setup.log to the email address forejt@avast.com and put a link to this thread to the message.

  2. Go to control panel → add/remove programs → avast antivirus → change/remove and choose Repair. That should solve the problem.

I,m sorry for letting the alarm go off. The problem is solved. The dll's got corrupted, why I do not know. Sending the setup log.
