Missing providers

When I installed Avast it said I wont be able to have the P2P providers, Instant Messaging Provider and the Standard Shield provider, because I have Norton installed on my computer. How can I enable these providers? Are they important?

Welcome

You can’t have 2 anti virus applications on the same system so you will have to remove Norton if you want to use avast!

Choose the removal tool for the Norton application you have instaled:

I installed Avast to remove some viruses that i had. Norton didnt remove them because I didnt subscribe. But Norton offered great internet protection, it advised me when a program tried to access the internet and firewall protection. Will i be getting the same resuslts from avast?

If I do remove Norton, how do I enable the providers? Will they start working on their own once Norton is gone?

Sorry if these sound like stupid questions, I dont have a lot of knowledge when it comes to these kinds of things.

Thanks in advance.

The avast Web Shield provides great internet protection.

When Norton is removed completely, and it can be a real pig to remove even after using add remove programs to uninstall it, so you should also run the tool suggested by YoKenny.

avast may well run OK, but you may need to reinstall it if the shields aren’t running.
The Standard Shield, ashServ.exe is the main scanning engine, so you could say it is important.

Alright thanks for the info.

You’re welcome, good luck.

Get rid of norton and use avast. I had norton on my computer for 4 years and was amased what viruses it failed to get rid of. (Keyloggers trojans etc that avast picked up). Been running avast home for 3 years now and no problems.
