moving avast pro from old pc to new pc

I bought Avast Pro 4.7 with a 2-year license in July 2005 and installed it on a PC running Windows 98SE. I have just bought a new PC running Windows XP/SP2. Once I have moved all my data to the new PC, I will no longer use the old one.

Can I use the July 2005 avast.exe installation file and license key to install Avast on my new PC? Do I have to uninstall it from the old one first or carry out some other action first before attempting to install on the new PC?

I would suggest you download the latest version of avast Pro from the avast.com site (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-professional.html) and install that and use the current license key. So long as you are only using avast pro on one system there shouldn’t be a problem.

You shouldn’t have to uninstall the old one first, you could use that system to down;oad the latest version and save that to a CD or USB pen drive so you don’t go on-line without protection.

Thanks for the advice! I’ll do just as you suggest.

I interpret your words as implying that two PCs with Avast Pro installed using the same license key cannot be on the internet simultaneously, but that either one can be on the internet if the other one is not — is this correct?

Hi, I believe the license is 1 computer. You could however install the free home version on the old computer. Hope this helps.

No, it is a license for one machine, not related to non-simultaneous usage, as soon as you get the new system up and running with avast uninstall it from the old system. You can as timcan mentions use avast for home if you intend keeping the old system.

Welcome to the forums.

Thank you, timcan and DavidR, for your clarifications.

Thanks also for the welcome to the forum, though I don’t know that I’ll be seen here very much; in the year and a half since I installed Avast, I’ve not had any problems with it at all.

Then again, XP Pro is a whole new world unto itself (much like Dante’s Inferno) and I may be back sooner than I might wish.

Thanks again for your help…
