MS-DOS~1.PIF S32EVNT1.DLL

When I launch the command window I get

C:\DOCUME~1\JJ\MS-DOS~1.PIF
C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL.
An Installable Virtual Device Driver failed Initilization. Choose ‘Close’ to terminate application.

I have switched from Norton to aVast!.

Ran all the Norton removal tools already.

Well this is the Symantec Event Library, S32EVNT1.DLL so there would appear to be remnants of Symantec, a google search for this dll returns many hits this is just one and the most relevant http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/529c2f9adcf33a1088256e22005026f1/a22e09c4be40053680256dac00564a18?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam

So it would appear there are still some registry entries left.

What version of NAV did you have and what removal tool did you use ?

Can you post the contents of these Windows Registry keys in your system?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet004\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD

About aswMonVd.dll and s32evnt1.dll in registry keys, see this very old thread about me:

How to SOLVE it: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=738.msg3628#msg3628

To remove NAV, follow:

  1. Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
  2. Use Symantec removal tool following the three steps defined in the SymNRT tool info.
  3. Boot.
  4. Install avast! Boot.
  5. See what you get.

Full SymNRT info:

  1. Download and save these three files to the Windows desktop:
    a) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/MSIFIX.bat
    b) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SymNRT.exe
    c) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SYMMSICLEANUP.reg

  2. Run the three files that you just downloaded
    a) On the Windows desktop, double-click the MSIFIX icon.
    Click Run.
A black window may appear very briefly.
    b) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SymNRT icon.
    Click Run.
    Click Next.
Click I accept the License Agreement, and click Next.
Type the letters and numbers that you see in the white box, and then click Next.
Click Yes or OK at each prompt.
You may need to click more than once. Your computer may be restarted for you more than once.
You may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.
    c) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SYMMSICLEANUP icon.
Click Run, and then click Yes.
    Click OK.

  3. Boot.

That article helped me to get rid of the problem.

Prior to that I had already run:

a) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/MSIFIX.bat

b) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SymNRT.exe

c) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SYMMSICLEANUP.reg

I think I am alright now.

Hopefully you are OK now the virtual drivers seem to be pointing correctly to the avast dll.
