I need some assistance about “msconfig” and disabling certain features.
A tech person was helping me with this and asked me to post a list of what’s in the “Start Up” tab, so I made a post, but the tech person did not respond to the list. Below is what he said:
"No problem just be careful with msconfig and disabling certain services, especially those that came from Microsoft (those are crucial for the stability of your system, although some of them like Indexing service are complete nonsense).
Best thing you can do, is to post a list of services you disabled and some of us will tell you what needs to stay enabled and what can be disabled. Then at least, you’ll sleep more peaceful not wondering you maybe disabled something very important."
He mentioned “some of us” so I’m not putting the responsibility on him totally, but he did ask me to post a list. So anyone who knows about “startup” features and which ones to “check” and which ones to “uncheck” are free to give their expertise.
Here’s the list of what is in the “Startup Tab” by their “groupings,” and the ones that are checked. The rest are unchecked or disabled. The “P” indicates checked. I copied and pasted it from Word, but the “check” symbol did not carry over to this post.

If you don’t get an answer right away in one post, please don’t start a new thread.
Be a little patient. Cluttering the forum with the sane question in more than one place only causes confusion.
Thanks
Not to mention, based on your previous experiences, don’t go messing with windows services, you could cripple or completely disable your OS.
For the most part windows services aren’t started using the MSConfig Startup Tab, The services that may be started here are usually related to user installed programs. If that program requires a service to help it perform its task I would say leave it well alone unless you know exactly what you are doing.
Responsibility on him ? For what ? Can you imageine how many people are asking in this forum and there are (to be true) just few of us that are trying to answer all those posts. It’s impossible. Besides, we do this for free, and even more important we DO have our private life as well (regular jobs, hundreds of other activities, wife, children, sports, house tasks etc.)
So if someone doesn’t respond to you in next five minutes doesn’t mean he/she is responsible for anything. If I asked you nicely to post that list, and I speciafically told you this:
"...Best thing you can do, is to post a list of services you disabled and some of us will tell you what needs to stay enabled and what can be disabled..."
That means just one thing… someone will take a look at that list and again someone will respond. I was away, so no need to call me “responsible”. By the way, I never received a notification mail that someone responded in that thread, and it happens a lot. I can confirm that, and I know many other people who can confirm same thing. Sometimes something is wrong with forum engine and simply it doesn’t send notifications. darth.mikey among others can confirm it anytime since he was the first one who asked me what’s wrong with notification engine.
I’m watching hundreds of threads, and I can not possibly know that you answered in that thread if I didn’t get a notification mail.
Another thing, you started another thread with exactly the same topic. I’m telling you, people easily get annoyed by that, and they will start to ignore your posts… I’m sorry I don’t wanna sound harsh, but that’s the fact. And worst of all, you sometimes start 3 or even more threads with the same topic.
Numerous times exactly the same line in many different threads… “…Tech people, you don’t have to reply to my inquiries about HijackThis and 7-zip because in another post…”
Thanks for the info. I did visit beemerworld, but it was for XP. My friend’s computer has ME. So I didn’t recognize almost everything on beemerworld. It didn’t have the same abbreviated services that I posted above. Megaman
Craftec, I’m not blaming you. I apologize if it came across that way. Perhaps I shouldn’t have used the word “responsibility.”
The reasons why I posted this was because the msconfig thing came up in another post under a different topic. And I didn’t think other techs would catch it. Also, after you requested me to post the list of settings, I kept checking for an answer and found none, so I thought you or the other tech people didn’t have the answer. I also thought perhaps you were away since it was Thanksgiving time, which you mentioned above.
I do get impatient and tend to want to get the answer right then and there, but I need to be patient because it’s not only me that’s wanting to get help. There are hundreds of other people posting problems, and you folks are helping voluntarily, day in and day out. So I give you folks the credit for doing that.
The interesting thing is this. When I post, and I know there are other people posting too, but I think in the back of my mind that I’m going to get immediate help. It’s as though, in the midst of all the other posts, I’m the only one there, so I’ll think that I’ll get my needs met first - that I’ll receive answers before the others.
When I reflect back, it’s like I’m selfish, but during my posts, I don’t realize that until someone says something like you and other techs, which helps to open my eyes to see what I’m doing and should not be doing, i.e., like unnecessary repostings, etc.
I do apologize, again. Thanks for all your help and the others too. Megaman
Also, after you requested me to post the list of settings, I kept checking for an answer and found none
There are going to be occasions when there will not be any responses.
When no one has an answer to give, you're not going to see anything. At this point, the only thing you can do is to queery Google
or another search engine and try to find help from another source.
Hi megaman04
I must admit I’ve seen heaps of threads and posts from you here on the boards.
Someone mentioned above when this happens you can often be ignored. Looking around seems Bob, Tech, David, Sasha & others have been really trying to help you out. They are very helpful people here !
There are really only a few people here who have “all” the answer’s , and no-one can know everything .
We all try to help , and we all know about different areas of Computing. I myself learn a lot just reading the board, and doing searches.
Generally I try not to start a thread unless it’s something critical. I’ve been a pest at times to, I’m sure. ;D
I’d like to make a suggestion . A Google search can often lead you to the answer to a problem , and introduce you to other Forums specific to your special needs.
i.e. It can’t hurt to join some other Forums and ask the same questions you ask here, just to get a broader , and maybe quicker response / overview of subjects.
I’m not in any way complaining to you, just trying to Help you
Also, I remember I asked you to post list of services, not startup items… besides, it seems like unbelievable long list of startup items you just attached in your reply. I don’t know which of those programs you need and which are not used at all. If I disable anything you use, of course you’ll come back and start to complain.
Give us a list of services from msconfig, but make sure to CHECK the option (put a checkmark) HIDE ALL MICROSOFT SERVICES because you don’t wanna disable any of them (at least not now). Post a list of services just like I said in here:
