I recently started getting this command line popup on my computer right when I would logon, and it only lasts about a tenth of a second, so onetime I quickly took a screenshot of it so I would be able to see what it was. It looks like its MSDN.exe

I looked on Google and it seems like MSDN is a pretty serious threat and needs to be removed immediately. I’ve searched the folder that it says its supposed to be in but can’t find anything, yet it still comes up every time I logon. Does anybody have any experience with this or know how I could get rid of it? I’m attaching the screenshot of the command popup if that’ll help anybody. Thanks!

Oh and by the way I’m running Windows 7 64bit…

MSDN seems not to be a windows core file.
Please click the start icon>in the search bar type msconfig>start up.
Can you see something related to msdn application there?

Have you tried looking on your computer for the MSDN.exe file and submit it to virustotal.com?

How about an MBAM scan?

I would but I honestly can’t seem to find the file. I’ve looked pretty much everywhere I could think of, and I’ve done a few different scans with MBAM and Avast and nothing has popped up so far. I did have a virus a few weeks back that I had to clean out but It seems to be completely gone, so if MSDN was part of that this could just be some leftovers that I can’t seem to roundup.

And there doesn’t seem to be any mention of it in the windows startup.

To avoid using multiple post with copy and paste you have to attach the log`s
Lower left corner: Additional Options > Attach ( Malwarebytes log / OTS log ) save OTS log as ANSI

Essexboy will look at the logs when he arrive here later today…

Look like the main part is hidden so I will use another tool to smack it

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

[]Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
[]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I think this one might have worked, since I saw MSDN under the other deletions section.

the Bamboo dock isn’t Malware though, so if it doesn’t work I might have to reinstall it since that seems to have been included in the deletions. I’m gonna restart my computer now and see if the MSDN command prompt that was coming up before shows up again.

Ok the combofix seems to have worked, as there isn’t a popup with the MSDN command prompt upon login anymore. Thanks for all the help, and if you see anything in the combofix log that still needs fixing then let me know. Again thanks!

I can see why combofix removed Bamboo as it was running from the same node as the malware

Could you run Malwarebytes now please to check for any orphans revealed

I did both a quick and full scan with MBAM and nothing came up, so it looks like everything is alright now

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :thumbsup:

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Uninstall ComboFix

Remove Combofix now that we’re done with it.

[*]Please press the Windows Key and R on your keyboard. This will bring up the Run… command.[*]Now copy/paste this: ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.

[/indent][]Please follow the prompts to uninstall Combofix.[]This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.[*]You will then recieve a message saying Combofix was uninstalled successfully once it’s done uninstalling itself.

Run OTS and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

[*]Click Start.
[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[]Click OK.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

Upgrading Java:

[] Go to this site and click Do I have Java
[] It will check your current version and then offer to update to the latest version

SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point

[*]Go to Control Panel and select System
[*]Select System
[*]On the left select System Protection and accept the warning if you get one
[*]Select System Protection Tab
[*]Select Create at the bottom
[*]Type in a name i.e. Clean
[*]Select Create

Now we can purge the infected ones

[*]GoStart > All programs > Accessories > system tools
[*]Right click Disc cleanup an select run as administrator
[*]Select Your main drive and accept the warning if you get one
[*]For a few moments the system will make some calculations
[*]Select the More Options tab
[*]In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
[*]Select Delete on the pop up
[]Select OK
[]Select Delete

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes. Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.
