Hi, can someone help?
Yesterday i connected my computer to the net again, after several months. My system is windows ME. Immediately i had the antivirus programm (from AVG) in the system-tray check for updates. It downloaded and rebooted.
From that moment on, there are three pop-ups upon everytime windows starts that say “A required DLL file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSVCR71.DLL was not found” The program’s icon has desapeared from the tray. I checked the program’s AVG site and windows Me are not supported anymore. And also, their programm does not Uninstall because this file in question is missing.
Then I downloaded Avast! home edition and installed it but it does not start because the file in mention is missing.I downloaded this file MSVCR71.DLL , unziped it and moved it to the windows\system folder, where it turns out it was already there from the initial setup.I replaced it.
I run regsvr32 c:\windows\system\msvcr71.dll and
regsvr32 %windir%\system\msvcr71.dll
and get “LoadLibrary(“WINDOWS\SYSTEM\msvcr71.dll”) failed. GetLastErrorReturns 0x00000002” both times.
Anyone ?
(The file you want is “AVG Remover,” choose according to whether your system is 32 or 64 bit. Since your system is running Windows ME, I would safely assume that your system is 32 bit. ;))
If these will work, remove both AV programs and then reinstall the one you want to use as two AV programs running together will most likely cause conflicts.
Hi,
I used the links. Thank you Ardvark. Avast! uninstalled.
AVG did not. It managed to scan. Apparently, the file is a threat. Allthough it handled it, the Run pop-up says that the file was loaded, but the DLL Register-Entry port was not found.
I wonder if i could copy the file ThatIsNotFound in the AVG directory, to uninstall AVG.
Although the author has stated that it has been tested on Windows XP only, others have written in to share that it works with other versions of Windows, including ME. However, please use caution. Sometimes these programs can actually delete more than what you want them to and end up rendering the OS unstable or unusable.
A third-party uninstaller. It will work for sure.
Is there a chance that after i uninstall i will not be able to dld/start AVAST! like i didn’t before because of a missing file MFC71.DLL ?
AVG built-in uninstaller says:
Local machine: installation failed
Initialization:
Error: Checking of state of the item file msvcr71.dll_W9x failed.
File opening failed. %FILE%= “C:\WINDOWS\System\msvcr71.dll”
Permission denied
AVG’s Uninstaller says:
Error starting program
the AVGREMOVER.EXE is linked to missing export
ADVAPI32.DLL:InitiateSystemShutdown.Exw
and
C:\WINDOWS\desktop\avgremover.exe
A device attached to the system is not functioning
btw a happy Thanksgiving if you celebrate.
oh and i moved the file in the Avg directory and it didn’t do anything.
It’s possible you will get the same error message when you try reinstalling avast. What I’m at a loss to understand is the fact that neither avast nor AVG recognized the same .dll file already installed, unless we’re dealing with a registry problem of some kind. ???
What is your system exactly (brand, model name and number) or is it a “white box?” Did your copy of Windows ME come preinstalled? If so, do you have the original Windows ME or restore CD that came with it?
Hi,
Ardvark,
Thanks for trying to help.
I think so, i have the CD. Although a quick search did not discover it.
I get what you are getting at… reinstalling the Library.
Hi Tech
Don’t i wish this could be done.
AVG will not uninstall because it misses a file which (avg) itself sees as hostile after an update.
AVAST proved uninstall friendly, i would proceed to uninstall it with the steps you mention if i had known them.
If AVG sees the msvr71.dll as hostile, I’m thinking that it’s either a fase positive or the file is truly infected. To be sure, you can run an online scan here…
If the file is clean, there might be an option with AVG’s main and real time scanners to exclude the file. This may help you to uninstall AVG, if you prefer to use the AVG Remover as opposed to the 3rd party uninstaller.
I remember a similar issue relating to a file name similar to this and AVG, but msvcr71.dll, see google search link below, are you sure that you gave the correct file name ?
You could download a copy of msvr71.dll from a trusworthy dll repository, but you would have to ensure it is the correct version for your OS ans Service Pack number, etc.
There may well be another copy of that file on your system, try a search in windows explorer for msvcr71.dll, see image, there is more than one copy in my system, so you could try copying the one in the system32\URTTemp folder into the system32 folder.
Yes it is false positive. I dlded the file from www.dll-files.com. I don’t know if it is a good site.
David R.,
Yes it is msvcr71.dll. Sorry. Many times i see things without noticing them.
I restored the old files, but i have no system32\URTTemp folder.
I think that is goes after the name, because it deleted the empty desktop folder called msvcr71.dll
I see that there are other people who have gone through the same as me… I will try to find how it was handled and post when i know how…
